Location of the municipality | |
Vucherens is a municipality in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Vucherens lies at 678 m above sea level. M. , 25 km southwest of the district capital Payerne (linear distance). The scattered settlement community extends on a ridge between the valleys of the Bressonne and the Carrouge , northeast of the heights of the Jorat , in the eastern Swiss Plateau .
The area of the 3.3 km² municipal area covers a section of the Molasse hill country northeast of the Jorat. The area is bordered by the Bressonne in the west and the Carrouge in the east. Both watercourses have cut deep erosion valleys into the molasse layers over the course of millions of years . To the west of the Carrouge valley is a wide terrace from which the slope gradually climbs to the ridge with the Bois de Bioley forest ( 753 m above sea level ) and the Bochet meadow hill (at 757 m above sea level, the highest point von Vucherens) increases. The Bressonne valley is also flanked by a terrace. In 1997, 11% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 24% for forests and woodlands and 65% for agriculture.
Vucherens includes the hamlets of Le Closy ( 666 m above sea level ) on the western flank of the Carrouge and La Râpe ( 680 m above sea level ) on the eastern flank of the Bressonne, as well as various individual farms. Neighboring communities of Vucherens are Syens , Vulliens , Jorat-Mézières , Ropraz and Hermenches .
population
With 576 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Vucherens is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 93.7% of the residents are French-speaking, 2.9% German-speaking and 1.6% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Vucherens was 379 in 1900. After that, a decrease to 258 inhabitants was recorded by 1970 due to strong emigration; since then the population has increased significantly again.
economy
Vucherens was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. With the construction of numerous single-family houses in the last few decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in Moudon and Lausanne .
traffic
The community has good transport connections. It is located on the main road from Moudon via Chexbres to Vevey . The well-developed main road 1 runs through the western part of the municipality from Bern via Payerne to Lausanne , which had high traffic frequencies before the opening of the autobahn from Bern to western Switzerland. Vucherens is connected to the public transport network by bus route 62 of the Transports publics de la région Lausannoise , which runs from Lausanne to Moudon.
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1215 under the name of Wisserens . Later the names Wichereins (1251) and Wicherens (1364) appeared. The place name is derived from the Burgundian personal name Wisihar (also known as Wicharius in the 9th century ) and means for the people of Wisihar .
In the Middle Ages, Vucherens was part of the Savoy Bailiwick of Moudon. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Moudon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Vucherens belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Moudon district. From 1700 to 1900, tuff stone , which was often used for bridges, wells and building houses in the region, was quarried in several quarries near Vucherens .
Attractions
The reformed church of Saint-Pierre-et-Pancrace was built in 1737 on the ridge above the village. Some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.
