The Carrouge is a 16 km long left tributary of the Broye in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . It drains a section of the Waadtländer Mittelland and belongs to the catchment area of the Rhine .

Surname

The Carrouge is named after the village of Carrouge , which originally goes back to the Latin word quadrivium (crossing).

geography

course

The headwaters of the Carrouge are located at about 850 m above sea level. M. in the forest heights of the Jorat near the settlement Mollie Margot , which belongs to the municipality of Savigny . In its upper reaches the brook is called Flon . It first flows eastwards before turning north at Servion . The Carrouge now occupies a wide hollow and has a constant gradient of around 2%. The Carrouge valley runs parallel to the river valleys of the Bressonne in the west and the upper Broye in the east; between the valleys lie the ridges of the hills from the Jorat to the north-northeast.

At Vucherens , the Carrouge gradually sinks into the molasse layers of the area and forms a densely wooded notch valley in the lower reaches . Having already arrived in the Broye valley southwest of Moudon , the Bressonne flows into the Carrouge and this flows into the Broye after around 400 m.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Carrouge is 50.9 km² and is drained through it via the Broye , the Aare and the Rhine to the North Sea.

It consists of 33.1% forest land , 58.2% agricultural land and 8.5% settlement area .

Area distribution

The mean height of the catchment area is 763  m above sea level. M. , the minimum height is 525  m above sea level. M. and the maximum height at 929  m above sea level. M.

Hydrology

At the confluence of the Carrouge in the Broye, its modeled mean flow rate (MQ) is 1.07 m³ / s. Its discharge regime type is pluvial jurassia, and its discharge variability is 26.

The flow rate of the Carrouge fluctuates relatively strongly over the course of the year. The highest water levels were determined for the months of December to March. The flow rate reaches its peak in February with 1.76 m³ / s. From March onwards, the discharge drops noticeably month after month and reaches its lowest level in August with 0.38 m³ / s, only to increase steadily from month to month in September.

character

The Carrouge stream is largely preserved in its natural or near-natural state. Even in the open valley sections, it is usually accompanied by a narrow forest border. The Carrouge is characterized by a pluvial runoff regime . Its hydropower was previously used in various places to operate mills.
