The population of Savigny was 1072 in 1900. Thereafter, a decrease to 884 inhabitants was recorded due to constant emigration until 1960. Since then, the population has increased significantly, combined with a tripling of the population within 30 years. Larger single-family house quarters developed around various former court settlements, especially at Mollie Margot, La Goille, Les Humbert and Claie aux Moines, which led to sprawl of the entire area.

economy

Up until the second half of the 20th century, Savigny was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today arable farming , dairy farming and animal husbandry, as well as forestry, have a certain place in the income structure of the population.

Further jobs are available in trade and in the service sector. Since the 1980s, larger industrial estates have been built near Claie aux Moines and Savigny. There are companies in the construction, IT, electrical engineering, transport and gardening sectors in the village. In the mid-1980s the new community center was opened, which in addition to the administrative administration also houses a theater hall. Savigny also has a Rudolf Steiner School and a home for the disabled. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community in the wake of Lausanne. Many workers are commuters who work primarily in Lausanne and the Vevey - Montreux region.

traffic

The community has good transport connections. It is located on the main road from Lausanne via Oron-la-Ville to Bulle . The closest motorway connections to the A9 (Lausanne-Sion), which opened in 1974 , are at Belmont (in the southwest, around 4 km away) and at Chexbres (in the south-east, around 8 km away). Savigny is connected to the public transport network by the number 65 of the Transports publics de la région Lausannoise , which runs from Lausanne to Servion.

history

Savigny's Church.

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1228 under the name Savinie . Later the names Savignie (1267) and Saguignie (1274), Savignetum (1300) and Savigny (1453) appeared. The place name may derive from a Gallo-Roman colonist named Sabinus or Savin (i) us . The name may also have been taken over from the French Abbey of Savigny-en-Lyonnais , which had founded a priory in neighboring Lutry.

Savigny has been under the bishop of Lausanne since the Middle Ages . A Franciscan community lived in the village from around 1490 until shortly before the Reformation . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Savigny came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Lausanne . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Lavaux district. It was not until 1825 that Savigny separated from the large parish of Lutry and became a politically independent parish.

Attractions

The church of Savigny, which fell victim to a fire in 1538, was subsequently rebuilt and has had glass paintings by Jean Prahin since 1975 .
