economy
Until the second half of the 20th century, Montpreveyres was a predominantly agricultural village. Today agriculture and livestock farming have only a minor role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Thanks to the good transport connections, several companies have settled in Montpreveyres in recent years. With the construction of several single-family houses in the last few decades, the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Lausanne .
traffic
The community has good transport connections. It is located on main road 1 from Lausanne via Payerne to Bern . Montpreveyres is cut in two by this main road, which was heavily frequented by transit traffic, especially before the opening of the motorway from Bern to western Switzerland. Montpreveyres is connected to the public transport network by the number 62 of the Transports publics de la région Lausannoise , which runs from Lausanne to Moudon . Another bus line operates the route from Montpreveyres to Les Cullayes .
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 1167 under the name Monspresbyteri . Later the names Montprevere (1177), Monteproverio (1524) and Montpreverroz (1525) appeared. The place name is derived from the Latin words mons (mountain) and presbyter (priest).
The Lausanne cathedral chapter left the area around Montpreveyres to the Canons of the Great Saint Bernard in the 12th century. They founded a small priory here, which was also dependent on the Lausanne cathedral chapter. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Montpreveyres came under the administration of the Moudon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district.
A merger of Montpreveyres with the neighboring communities of Mézières, Les Cullayes and Servion was sought, but failed on January 15, 2006 at the ballot box on the narrow no of the residents. The other three municipalities agreed to the merger.
Attractions
The former convent building was converted into a rectory, while the priory church no longer exists. The new church of Montpreveyres was built in 1758 just outside the village above the Bressonne valley. It has a bell from 1483. In the forest of the Jorat, where the borders of the three districts of Lausanne, Echallens and Oron meet , the monumental boundary stone Borne des trois Jorats has been located since 1536 ; the original was replaced in 1928.
