Rivaz is a municipality in the Lavaux-Oron district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Rivaz is 445 m above sea level. M. , 12 km east-southeast of the canton capital of Lausanne (linear distance). The wine-growing village extends over a small protrusion in the middle of the vineyards on the steep slope of Lavaux , below Chexbres, in a panoramic position around 70 m above lake level of Lake Geneva .
With an area of only 0.32 km², Rivaz is the smallest municipality in the canton of Vaud. Together with the municipality of Kaiserstuhl and Gottlieben (also 0.32 km² = 32 ha) it is the smallest municipality in Switzerland. The area comprises a section of the Lavaux on the north-eastern shore of Lake Geneva (around 700 m of the lakeshore line). The community soil extends from the lake shore northward up the steep vineyard to below the settlement area of Chexbres, where at 542 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Rivaz is reached. The western boundary is the Forestay stream . In 1997, 25% of the municipal area was in settlements, 0% in forests and woodlands, 69% in agriculture and a little less than 6% was unproductive land.
Rivaz includes the hamlet of Sallaz ( 410 m above sea level ) on the edge of a small plaza. The neighboring municipalities of Rivaz are Puidoux , Chexbres and Saint-Saphorin (Lavaux) .
population
With 358 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Rivaz is one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 83.6% of the residents are French-speaking, 5.7% German-speaking and 4.1% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Rivaz was 328 in 1900. It remained fairly stable throughout the 20th century.
economy
Until the second half of the 20th century, Rivaz was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, viticulture on the optimally sunny slopes of Lavaux (around 20 hectares) has an important role in the income structure of the population. Quality wines of the Appellations Epesses, Dézaley , Saint-Saphorin and Calamin are produced in Rivaz . Other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector (wine cellars and shops). In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work primarily in Lausanne and the Vevey - Montreux region.
traffic
Although the community is off the through streets, it is still well developed in terms of traffic. A connection leads through Riex from the main road 9 on the lakeshore up to Chexbres . The next motorway connection to the A9 (Lausanne-Sion), which opened in 1974, is at Chexbres, around 1.5 km from the town. On April 2, 1861, the Lausanne-Villeneuve section of the Lausanne- Valais railway line went into operation with a station in Rivaz.
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 1141 under the name Ripa ; In 1324 the name Rippa appeared . The place name is derived from the Latin word ripa (shore). The earlier settlement was probably on the shores of Lake Geneva, but was completely destroyed in 563 due to a tidal wave triggered by a landslide near Martigny. Rivaz was then rebuilt at a safe height on the slope.
Rivaz has belonged to the bishops of Lausanne since the 13th century. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Lausanne . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Rivaz belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Lavaux district. Rivaz was part of the large parish of Saint-Saphorin until 1810 and only then became a politically independent parish.
Attractions
Thanks to the Law for the Protection of Lavaux, Rivaz has retained its original shape as a compact wine-growing village with buildings from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
