Bussigny-sur-Oron lies at 768  m above sea level. M. , three kilometers east of the town of Oron-la-Ville and 19 km east-northeast of the canton capital Lausanne (linear distance ). The scattered settlement community extends on a south exposed slope in the valley of the Mionne , in the eastern edge zone of the Waadtländer Mittelland .

The area of ​​the former municipality area of ​​just 1.2 km² covers a section of the Molasse hill country in the Alpine foothills. The southern part is taken up by the wide valley of the Mionne, which drains the area west to the Broye . With 77 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010) Bussigny-sur-Oron was one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 89.6% of the residents are French-speaking, 7.5% German-speaking and 1.5% English-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Bussigny-sur-Oron was 58 in 1850 and 83 in 1900. Thereafter, a decrease of around 55% to 38 inhabitants was recorded by 1970 due to strong emigration; since then the population has increased significantly again.

The first written mention of the place took place in 1433 under the name Bussignye . The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Bussenius . Since it was first mentioned, Bussigny-sur-Oron belonged to the Oron lordship, which had been under the Counts of Gruyères since the 15th century. After the conquest of Vaud by Bern , the Oron dominion was converted into a Bernese bailiff in 1557 and the Reformation was introduced in the village . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Bussigny-sur-Oron belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district. It was not until 1812 that Bussigny-sur-Oron became an independent political municipality when it was replaced by Oron-le-Châtel .
