geography

Carrouge is 728  m above sea level. M. , 26 km southwest of the district capital Payerne (air line). The village extends on a hilltop west of the Carrouge valley , east of the Jorat plateau , in the Vaud Central Plateau .

The area of the 5.4 km² large municipal area comprises a section of the Molasse hill country between the Jorat and the upper reaches of the Broye . The central part of the area is bordered by the Bressonne in the west and the Carrouge in the east. In between is the Champ du Bochet ridge ( 757  m above sea level ), from which the Carrouge hilltop is separated by a small valley. To the south-west, the municipality extends into the forest of La Côte (at 783  m above sea level, the highest point of Carrouge) on the eastern roof of the Jorat. A small part of the community lies east of the Carrouge stream and extends over the adjacent plateau ( 720  m above sea level ) into the catchment area of the Parimbot stream . In 1997, 10% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 20% for forests and woodlands and 70% for agriculture.

The hamlets of Le Borgeau ( 711  m above sea level ) east of the Carrouge stream, La Croix-d'Or ( 722  m above sea level ) and Ecorche-Boeuf ( 715  m above sea level ) in the valley of the Bressonne belong to Carrouge as well as some smaller court settlements and several individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Carrouge are Vulliens , Ferlens , Mézières , Montpreveyres , Ropraz and Vucherens .

Today the settlement area of Carrouge has grown together almost completely with that of Mézières.

economy

Carrouge was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and animal husbandry have an important place in the income structure of the population. With the creation of a commercial zone around 2000, new companies have settled in Carrouge in recent years, which are active in the IT, timber trade and carpentry sectors. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. With the construction of numerous single-family houses in the last few decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Moudon and Lausanne . Carrouge is the location of the Cinéma du Jorat.

traffic

The community has good transport connections. It is located on the main road from Moudon via Chexbres to Vevey , but also has a good connection to main road 1 (Lausanne-Moudon). Carrouge is connected to the public transport network by the number 62 of the Transports publics de la région Lausannoise , which runs from Lausanne to Moudon.

history

The municipality of Carrouge was already settled in Roman times, which was confirmed by the remains of a Roman villa and coin finds. The first written mention of the place took place in 1255 under the name Carrogium . In the Middle Ages the names Carrojoz and Carroge appeared , and in the 19th century the spelling Carouge was also common. The place name is derived from the Latin word quadrivium ( wayside cross), from which the old French variant carroge originated.

Carrouge, which was under the sovereignty of the Savoy, was united with the rule of Vulliens from the 13th to the 15th century. Then it formed its own rule, which also included Mézières and Les Cullayes. The village lords gave up the castle in Carrouge in the 16th century and moved to the castle Carrouge in the old town of Moudon .

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Moudon Bailiwick. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Carrouge belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district.
