Gustave Roud

Gustave Roud (born April 20, 1897 in Saint-Légier , above Vevey , † November 10, 1976 in the hospital of Moudon ) was a Swiss writer , translator and photographer of the French language.

In 1908 Gustave Roud moved with his parents to Carrouge VD in the Haut Jorat in the Vaudois Oberland, to a farm that the family had inherited from their maternal grandfather. He lived there all his life until his death with his sister Madeleine, who was four years older than him.

biography

Gustave Roud's math teacher at high school was the conductor Ernest Ansermet , and his French teacher was the writer Edmond Gilliard . Roud then studied classical philology at the University of Lausanne , graduating with a licentiate. Since he lived from writing, he translated the poems of Hölderlin, Novalis and Rilke. He was an employee of the Cahiers vaudois and the Revue Romande and also took an active part in the newspaper Aujourd'hui (1929-1931) and in the book guild , which was founded in 1936.

Since he lived in seclusion on his parents' farm in Carrouge, poetry, of which he published several volumes, seemed to be his only passion, even if the poet obviously had a great talent for photography and translation, activities which he only carried out sporadically . Gustave Roud cultivated many friendships with artists, poets and writers: Charles Ferdinand Ramuz , Ernest Ansermet , René Auberjonois . Gustave Roud also exerted a strong influence on numerous contemporary poets: Georges Borgeaud , Maurice Chappaz , Anne Perrier , Philippe Jaccottet or Jacques Chessex .

Gustave Roud is considered one of the greatest poets in French-speaking Switzerland. In his poetry, which is entirely committed to an external theme - the landscapes of the Haut-Jorat - he tries to anticipate an elsewhere, a lost paradise.

After the poet's death, an association of Friends of Gustave Roud was founded, which has been publishing the Gustave Roud Cahiers since 1982 , in which numerous unpublished texts were published. In 2002, Roud was rediscovered in Paris: Several of his works were published in the prestigious series of paperbacks Poésie / Gallimard , and the same publisher published its correspondence with Philippe Jaccottet. This in turn published a revised version of his essay on the poet, first published in 1968.
