Villars-le-Comte is a municipality in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Villars-le-Comte is 765 m above sea level. M. , 16 km southwest of the district capital Payerne (air line). The street line village extends in the Molasse hill country of the northern Waadtländer Mittelland , on the upper western valley slope of the Cerjaule , in a panoramic location with a view of the Bern, Freiburg and Savoy Alps .
The area of the 4.2 km² large municipality covers a section of the ridge between the Lembe in the west and the Cerjaule in the east. The parish soil does not reach these watercourses, but is mainly drained by the Cerjaule, which flows into the Broye near Lucens . On the meadow hill above the village is 806 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Villars-le-Comte. In the southwest the area extends into the Bois de la Gouille , to the northeast to the Bois d'Amont ( 776 m above sea level ). In 1997, 3% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 26% for forests and woodlands and 71% for agriculture.
Several individual farms belong to Villars-le-Comte. Villars-le-Comte's neighboring municipalities are Forel-sur-Lucens , Lucens and Montanaire in the canton of Vaud and Prévondavaux in the canton of Friborg .
population
With 132 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Villars-le-Comte is one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 96.7% of the residents are French-speaking, 0.8% German-speaking and 0.8% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Villars-le-Comte was 239 in 1860 and 226 in 1900. After that, a decrease of around 50% to 109 inhabitants was recorded by 1970 due to strong emigration; since then the population has increased again slightly.
economy
Villars-le-Comte was a predominantly agricultural village until the middle of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including an organ building workshop. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Moudon and Lucens .
traffic
The community is off the main thoroughfares, but can be reached relatively easily from Lucens . The village is connected to the public transport network by a postbus course that runs from Moudon via Villars-le-Comte to Thierrens .
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 1147 under the name Vilario Comitis . The names Villare comitis (1168), Villari Comite (1182) and Vilar le Conte later appeared in the 13th century. The place name, translated as the Count's village , goes back to a former castle on the hill above Villars-le-Comte.
Villars-le-Comte was always under the rule of Lucen, which belonged to the bishops of Lausanne. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Moudon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Villars-le-Comte belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Moudon district.
Attractions
The current Reformed Church was built in 1822 on the site of a medieval chapel. There are still some stately farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries in the village.
