The area of the 4.8 km² large municipality covers a section of the Molasse heights between the Jorat and the upper reaches of the Broye . The elongated narrow strip of the municipal ban of Ropraz is bounded in the east by the middle course of the Bressonne, which over time has created a wooded valley up to 60 m deep in the molasse layers . From the Bressonne the parish extends westward onto the Ropraz plateau, which is divided into two parts by the valley of the Ruisseau de Corcelles . To the south the area extends to the Cerjuz brook . Ropraz has a small exclave on the eastern slope of the Jorat near Montpreveyres; here with 840 m above sea level. Ropraz includes the hamlets of Vers chez les Rod ( 765 m above sea level ) west of the Ruisseau de Corcelles valley, Ussières ( 720 m above sea level ) in the Bressonne valley and several individual farms. Neighboring municipalities to Ropraz are Jorat-Mézières , Montpreveyres , Corcelles-le-Jorat , Hermenches and Vucherens .
population
With 495 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Ropraz is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 87.1% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.0% German-speaking and 2.4% speak Serbo-Croatian (as of 2000). The population of Ropraz was 292 people in 1900. Thereafter, a decrease to 205 inhabitants was recorded due to steady emigration until 1960; since then the population has increased significantly again.
economy
Until the second half of the 20th century, Ropraz was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, agriculture and animal husbandry have a certain place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and especially in the service sector. New companies have set up shop in the Bressonne valley and along Hauptstrasse 1 since the 1960s, including Foto Labo Club SA (near the border with Montpreveyres), a Migrol petrol station and a few smaller businesses. Ropraz is the location of the L'Estrée art gallery. With the construction of several single-family houses in the last few decades, the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work mainly in Lausanne .
traffic
The community has good transport connections. It is located around 1 km from the main road 1 from Lausanne via Payerne to Bern . This road was heavily frequented by transit traffic, especially before the opening of the autobahn from Bern to western Switzerland. Ropraz is connected to Corcelles-le-Jorat by a PostBus course , which is served by bus route 62 of the Transports publics de la région Lausannoise (Lausanne- Moudon ).
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1234 under the name Rospraz . Later the names Roppra and Rosprad appeared . The place name is probably derived from the French pré rond (round meadow).
In the Middle Ages, Ropraz belonged to the rule of Vullien. After 1327 there were numerous changes of ownership as a result of inheritance and sales, and Ropraz at times also formed its own rule. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Moudon Bailiwick . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Ropraz belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic , which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Oron district.
Attractions
The Reformed Church of Ropraz was built in 1761 on the site of a medieval chapel. As a hall church with a three-sided choir and roof turret , it shows the typical style of the Vaudois country churches. There are two castles in the municipality of Ropraz: The Château de Ropraz, a stately country estate that belonged to the Lords of Ropraz, and the Château d'Ussières. In the Bourg-Dessous there is a farmhouse from 1633, which is a listed building.
