Oleyres is a village in the municipality of Avenches in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . Oleyres was previously a political municipality and was incorporated into the municipality of Avenches on July 1, 2011.
geography
Oleyres is 550 m above sea level. M. , eight and a half kilometers northeast of the district capital Payerne ( linear distance ). The clustered village extends on a wide saddle between the forest heights of Bois de Châtel and Forêt du Grand Belmont, south of the Broye plain , in the Swiss plateau .
The area of the municipal area of 1.9 km² covers a section of the Friborg Molasse hill country and is surrounded on three sides by the Friborg canton. The central part is occupied by the saddle of Oleyres, which descends to the east to the valley of the Chandon , to the west to the valley of the Ruisseau de Coppet (a side stream of the Arbogne ). In the south the area extends to the ridge of the Grand Belmont , on which 645 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Oleyres is reached. To the northeast, the municipality extends along the southern slope of the Bois de Châtel (up to 600 m above sea level ) to the course of the Chandon river. In 1997, 5% of the municipal area was in settlements, 25% in forests and woodlands, 69% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.
Some individual farms belong to Oleyres. Neighboring communities of Oleyres were Avenches in the canton of Vaud and Domdidier , Léchelles and Misery-Courtion in the canton of Friborg .

With 240 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010), Oleyres was one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 78.9% of the residents are French-speaking, 15.3% German-speaking and 2.7% English-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Oleyres was 317 in 1860, compared to 283 in 1900. After the population had decreased to 174 by 1970, a slight increase has been registered since then.
economy
Until the second half of the 20th century, Oleyres was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, the have farming and fruit growing an important role in the employment structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. These include a timber construction company and an antique joinery. Several mills used to operate along the Chandon. Since 1879 there was also a rolling mill in the village. In the past few decades, Oleyres has also developed into a residential community. Some workers are commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
traffic
The community is located off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from Avenches . The Avenches motorway junction on the A1 ( Lausanne - Bern ) is around 5 km from the town center. Oleyres has no connection to the public transport network.
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1228 under the name Oleres . Later, the spellings Olyeres (1239), Olleres (1255), Olieres (1272), Oleires (1340) and Olleyres , Oleyre , Oleire and Oleyres appeared in the 14th century. The place name goes back to the Latin word olla (pot), from which the old French olier developed. It refers to a place where pottery was made.
Oleyres initially belonged to a wealthy citizen of Freiburg , who sold the village and its surroundings to the Hauterive monastery in 1272. From this it came to Avenches in 1310. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Avenches . Freiburg's claims for the return of Oleyres were not granted. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the place was annexed to the canton of Friborg during the Helvetic period in 1798 . When the Mediation Constitution came into force in 1803, Oleyres was reassigned to the canton of Vaud as an exclave together with what is now the Avenches district.
Attractions
The Oleyres Chapel was built in 1735 and restored in 1916 and 1949. Some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.
