population

With 3,064 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Domdidier was one of the medium-sized communities in the canton of Friborg. 86.3% of the residents are French-speaking, 5.8% German-speaking and 3.1% speak Portuguese (as of 2000). The population of Domdidier was 743 in 1850 and 847 in 1900. During the 20th century the population slowly increased. Only since 1960 (1159 inhabitants) has rapid population growth combined with a doubling of the population within 40 years been recorded.

economy

Until the middle of the 20th century, Domdidier was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, arable and fruit growing, thanks to the fertile soils in the Broye plain, as well as cattle breeding, have a certain place in the livelihood structure of the population.

Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Numerous businesses have set up shop in Domdidier since the 1960s. A larger commercial and industrial zone was created in the Broye plain north of the railway line. Today, companies from the electrical industry (Wago Contact SA), the food industry, the building trade, telecommunications, mechanical engineering and mechanical workshops are represented in the former municipality. In the last few decades Domdidier has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the Payerne and Freiburg regions.

traffic

The former community is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on main road 1 from Bern via Payerne to Lausanne , which was very busy before the opening of the autobahn from Bern to western Switzerland. The nearest connection to the A1 motorway (Lausanne-Bern), which was opened in 1997 and crosses the northern part of the municipality, is around 2.5 km from the town center.

On August 25, 1876, the railway line from Murten to Payerne with a station in Domdidier was put into operation. Bus routes from Transports publics Fribourgeois , which run from Domdidier to Portalban (in some cases to Gletterens ) and Freiburg , ensure the fine distribution of public transport .

history

The municipality of Domdidier was settled very early on, which has been proven by the finds of a Roman burial ground and the foundations of a mausoleum from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. At that time, the Roman road from Aventicum (around 4 km northeast of today's Domdidier) to Octodurum (Martigny) or to Eburodunum (Yverdon-les-Bains) led through the area.

The first written mention of the place took place in 1162 under the name Donno Desiderio . The names Sanctus Desiderius (1228), Dundedier and Dognodiderio (1267) appeared later . The place name goes back to the Latinized Domnus Desiderius (Saint Desiderius / Didier).

Since the Middle Ages , Domdidier formed a rule that was initially under the Count of Neuchâtel, in 1267 to the Lords of Montagny and from 1405 under the influence of the Counts of Savoy . The domination of Domdidier then experienced numerous changes of ownership. Since the late 14th century, the citizens of Domdidier received certain freedoms, which were later renewed again and again under the new rulers.

In 1478 the village came under the sovereignty of Freiburg through purchase and was assigned to the Vogtei Montagny. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Domdidier belonged to the Avenches district until 1803, then to the Montagny district and from 1831 to the Dompierre district before being incorporated into the Broye district in 1848.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Didier was given its current appearance when it was rebuilt between 1837 and 1842. There are two chapels in Domdidier: the Notre-Dame de Compassion chapel, which was built on the site of an early Christian church from the 5th or 6th century , and the Chapel of Coppet. Domdidier Castle was built in 1527. It is a three-storey complex with a staircase tower in front of it, the external shape of which has hardly changed since the time it was built.
