geography

Aumont lies at 594  m above sea level. M. , 5.5 km south of the district capital Estavayer-le-Lac (air line). The farming village extends on a slope slightly to the northeast between the Petite Glâne valley and the Bois d'Aumont forest heights , in the Molasse hill country between Lake Neuchâtel and the Broyetal , in the northwestern Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 5.3 km². The area reached from the Petite Glâne southwards over the high plateau of Aumont and the height of the Bois d'Aumont ( 725  m above sea level ) to the Ruisseau du Moulin (village stream of Ménières) and into the forest of Verdière .

population

With 419 inhabitants (2002), Aumont was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. In 1888 the village had 499 inhabitants. Aumont has a number of individual farms.

economy

Aumont was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming , fruit growing , dairy farming and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including a sawmill. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Estavayer-le-Lac and Payerne regions.

traffic

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from Payerne to Combremont-le-Grand . The closest connection to the A1 motorway (Lausanne – Bern), which opened in 2001, is around 6 km from the town center. Aumont is connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics Fribourgeois bus route , which operates a circular route from Estavayer-le-Lac to the hinterland.

history

The Aumont area was populated very early. Tumuli from the La Tène period were discovered near the village . The place was first mentioned in a document around 1157 under the name Alto Monte ; from 1226 the name Altus mons has been handed down, which translated means high mountain .

Since the Middle Ages , Aumont has formed its own small rule, which has been under the sovereignty of the Lords of Estavayer since the 14th century. After Bern had conquered the Vaud in 1536, the village came under the rule of Friborg and was assigned to the Estavayer Bailiwick. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Aumont belonged to the Estavayer district during the Helvetic and subsequent periods before being incorporated into the Broye district in 1848. In 1804, Granges-de-Vesin was separated from Aumont.

As part of the community mergers, which the canton of Friborg has sponsored since 2000, the residents of Aumont, Montet (Broye) , Frasses and Granges-de-Vesin spoke out in favor of a merger. With effect from January 1, 2004, the new municipality of Les Montets was created .
