Since 1980 (86 inhabitants) there has been rapid population growth combined with a doubling of the number of inhabitants within 20 years.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Sévaz was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today arable farming , fruit growing and cattle breeding have a certain place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. An industrial and commercial zone was established to the west of the village in the 1980s. Metal construction companies, waste disposal companies, mechanical workshops, a sandblasting shop and a camping equipment company have settled here. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Estavayer-le-Lac and Payerne regions.

The community has good transport links. It is located on the main road from Payerne to Estavayer-le-Lac . The next connection to the A1 motorway (Lausanne-Bern), which opened in 2001 and crosses the municipality, is around 3 km from the town center. Sévaz is connected to the public transport network by a bus line operated by Transports publics Fribourgeois , which runs as a circular route from Estavayer-le-Lac.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1056 under the name Silva . Later, the names Selva (1230), Seyva (1337), Syva (1668) and Sèvaz (1849) appeared. The place name is derived from the Latin word silva (forest).

Since the Middle Ages, Sévaz was under the rule of Estavayer, but the bishops of Lausanne also owned land on the parish grounds. In the 12th century a small priory was founded near Sévaz, which belonged to the Canons of the Great Saint Bernard. After Bern had conquered Vaud in 1536, Sévaz was assigned to the Estavayer Bailiwick. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village was part of the Estavayer district during the Helvetic and subsequent periods before being incorporated into the Broye district in 1848. Numerous houses were affected by a village fire on the night of October 2nd to 3rd, 1847.

Attractions

The Saint-Nicolas de Myre chapel has been mentioned since the 14th century and was extensively restored in 1774–75. Today it has impressive modern stained glass windows.
