economy
The service sector employs most of the workers with a share of more than 40%. Agriculture and industry (especially construction, tobacco, electrical engineering and electronics) share the rest with around 30% each.
history
A dugout canoe from the Middle Stone Age (approx. 6200 BC), found in Estavayer-le-Lac, testifies to the early settlement of the area. Numerous finds from the Neolithic in Portalban allow the conclusion that humans quickly settled in the region.
From the Bronze and Stone Ages , manufacturing centers for jewelry, weapons (axes, swords), weaving and pottery have been found in Cheyres , Font , Estavayer-le-Lac, Autavaux , Gletterens and Portalban.
Celtic and Roman finds are also numerous. The field name Broye is Celtic: Broye = brogia (land water).
From 500 AD the Christianization can be proven in the whole area. The first churches include Domdidier, Dompierre-le-Grand, Dompierre-le-Petit and Tours.
The feudal lordship expanded from the year 1000. It is the beginning of the castle building. Several castles and ruins bear witness to this time. After the Burgundian Wars , Freiburg's influence increased. In 1536 the Broye disintegrated into several pieces. As a result of the Reformation, Catholic exclaves were formed in the middle of the Broye in Vaud.
From the 16th century onwards, the political process was led by some very powerful families ( patriciate ). This power fell apart with the French invasion in the early 19th century.
After the Sonderbund War (1847), the canton of Friborg adopted a new constitution. The Broye became one of the seven districts and has remained in this form to this day. On March 19, 1848, the new constitution of the canton of Friborg came into force. This is also the hour of birth of the Broye district.
