The municipality extends in the northwestern Freiburg Central Plateau on a plateau above the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel , on the ridge between the lake and the Broye plain .

The area of the 8.3 km² municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Neuchâtel (around 3.5 km of the lakeshore line). The community soil extends southward from the lakeshore over a 300 m wide, flat edge of the bank, which is partly covered with reeds and partly with forest. This is followed by a 30 m high steep slope, which leads to the plateau of the Molasse ridge between Lake Neuchâtel and the Broye plain. This plateau is divided by two short erosion valleys , the streams of which flow into the lake. To the east, the municipal area extends over the forest area Bois des Esserts to the plateau of Les Planches and to the south to the height of Montbrelloz. The highest peaks of Vernay are on the Belmont corridor at Les Planches and at the height east of Montbrelloz, each with 505  m above sea level. M. achieved. In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 18% for forests and woodlands and 74% for agriculture; just over 2% was unproductive land.

Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and animal husbandry have an important place in the income structure of the population. Some other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades, thanks to their attractive location, all three localities have also developed into residential communities. Autavaux, Forel and Montbrelloz are connected to the public transport network by a bus from the Transports publics Fribourgeois , which runs a circular route from Estavayer-le-Lac.

history

The municipality of Vernay was settled very early. The remains of several Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements have been found near the lake shore .

Since the Middle Ages Autavaux, Forel and Montbrelloz have been under the lords of Estavayer. After Bern had conquered Vaud in 1536, the area came under the rule of Friborg and was assigned to the Estavayer Bailiwick. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime in 1798, the villages belonged to the Estavayer district during the Helvetic and subsequent periods before being incorporated into the Broye district in 1848.

In the context of the municipal mergers promoted by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the merger of Forel (FR), Autavaux, Montbrelloz, Rueyres-les-Prés and Morens was initially discussed. After this project failed, Autavaux and Forel again negotiated a merger from 2003. Montbrelloz also joined these talks at the beginning of 2004. At the municipal assemblies on November 10, 2004, the merger project in Autavaux and Forel was approved unanimously, in Montbrelloz with a yes majority of just 52%.

With effect from January 1, 2006, the merger became legally binding. Because all three former parishes had a similar population, the name Vernay was chosen for the new parish. Vernay was the name of a village that was located on today's municipal area and belonged to the Estavayer rule, but was abandoned in the late Middle Ages, a so-called desert .
