Vesin is a town and formerly an independent political municipality in the Broye district of the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . On January 1, 2005, Vesin was incorporated into Cugy .

geography

Vesin lies at 515  m above sea level. M. , two kilometers southwest of Cugy and five kilometers west-southwest of Payerne (as the crow flies) in the Friborg exclave of Estavayer-le-Lac . The former street row village extends on the slope and in a valley basin at the northeast foot of the Molasse hill country between Lake Neuchâtel and the Broyetal , in the northwestern Freiburg Central Plateau . The former municipality area was around 3.4 km². The area encompassed a section on both sides of the village stream of Vesin, extends in the north to the edge of the Broye plain, in the west and south-west to the heights of the Molasse hill country (in the Bois d'Aumont up to 651  m above sea level ) and in the east to the Bois forest of the Invuardes .

population

With 242 inhabitants (2000), Vesin was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg before the merger. In 1900 the community had 259 inhabitants. After 1950, a high rate of migration was observed. Only since 1980 (175 inhabitants) has there been significant population growth again.

economy

Vesin was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, have agriculture , the cultivation of tobacco , the dairy industry and animal husbandry an important role in the employment structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Payerne and Estavayer-le-Lac regions.

traffic

The village has good transport links. It is located on the connecting road from Estavayer-le-Lac to Granges-près-Marnand , which crosses here with the road from Payerne to Combremont-le-Grand . The closest connection to the A1 motorway (Lausanne-Bern), which opened in 2001, is around 3 km from the town center. Vesin is connected to the public transport network by a bus line from Transports publics Fribourgeois , which serves the hilly hinterland on the circuit from Estavayer-le-Lac.

history

The first documentary mention was made in 1223 under the name Visins . The place name goes back to the patois expression vesin meaning neighbor . The story of Vesin is closely related to that of Cugy. The village was under the rule of Cugy, which belonged to a sideline of the Lords of Estavayer, since the 12th century. This rule came in 1329 as a fiefdom to the barons of Montagny and in 1477 under the rule of Freiburg. In 1536, after the Bernese had conquered Vaud, the village was allocated to the Estavayer Bailiwick.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Vesin belonged to the Estavayer district during the Helvetic and subsequent periods and was incorporated into the Broye district in 1848. As part of the community mergers funded by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the previously politically independent community Vesin was incorporated into Cugy with effect from January 1, 2005 . Vesin has always belonged to the parish of Cugy.
