history

The area of Montbrelloz was already settled in Roman times, which can be proven by the remains of the foundations of a Roman villa. The first written mention of the place took place in 1228 under the name Mons Brenlos . Later, the names Mons Bralou (1256), Montbrelo (1325) and Montbrenlo (1343) appeared.

Montbrelloz arose around a monastery of the Order of Malta founded in the 13th century. The village was under the lords of Estavayer. After Bern had conquered Vaud in 1536, Montbrelloz came under the rule of Friborg and was assigned to the Estavayer Bailiwick. The monastery was closed at that time. In 1559 leprosy spread in the village (brought in by crusaders from the Orient), which is why a hospital for lepers was built.

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Montbrelloz was part of the Estavayer district during the Helvetic and subsequent periods before being incorporated into the Broye district in 1848. As part of the amalgamation of municipalities promoted by the canton of Friborg since 2000, Montbrelloz merged with the previously independent municipalities of Autavaux and Forel (FR) to form the new municipality of Vernay with effect from January 1, 2006 .

Attractions

From the former monastery only the choir (15th century) in the now restored Vieille Eglise is preserved. Next to the old church is a granary built in the 18th century with a mansard roof, now converted into a garage. In the old town center there are still some stately farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries.
