geography

Ménières lies at 503  m above sea level. M. , 6 km southwest of Payerne (air line) in the Friborg exclave Estavayer-le-Lac . The clustered village extends slightly higher on the western edge of the Broye valley , on both sides of the village stream Ruisseau du Moulin (also called Ruisseau de Monteman ), at the eastern foot of the Aumont , in the northwestern Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 4.3 km² municipal area covers a section of the central Broye valley. The eastern part of the municipality lies in an open, slightly undulating landscape west of the Broye, drained by the village stream of Ménières. To the west, the municipality extends into the adjacent Molasse hill country , includes the lower slope of the Aumont and reaches Les Moilles near Sassel at 635  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Ménières. In 1997, 8% of the municipal area was in settlements, 15% in forests and woodlands, 76% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.

With 439 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Ménières is one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg. 94.3% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.7% German-speaking and 0.3% speak Italian (as of 2000). The population of Ménières was 305 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century, the population hovered between 280 and 300 people until 1960. After that, a significant decrease to 233 inhabitants (1980) was recorded before population growth began again.

Ménières was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming (sugar beet, rape), tobacco cultivation, fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In Ménières there is a construction company and a mechanical workshop. To the north of the village there is a large gravel and sand pit operated by the Bersier SA company. Over the past few decades, Ménières has also developed into a residential community. Most of the employed are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Payerne region.

The municipality is located at the intersection of the connecting roads from Estavayer-le-Lac to Granges-près-Marnand and from Payerne to Combremont-le-Grand . Ménières is connected to the public transport network through the Postbus course , which runs from Payerne to Combremont-le-Petit .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1142 under the name Maineres . Later, the names Meinires , Meneriers and Mennieres (1228) and Mignières , Minuères , Meynère , Mesnières and Minières appeared . The place name is derived from the old French word maine (residence, place of residence).

Since the Middle Ages , Ménières formed its own small lordship, which was under the rule of La Molière. After Bern had conquered Vaud in 1536, Ménières came under the sovereignty of Friborg and was assigned to the Bailiwick of Surpierre as an exclave. The village was hit several times by severe plague epidemics, which is why a hospital for lepers was set up outside the village. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Ménières belonged to the Estavayer district during the Helvetic and the following period and to the Surpierre district from 1817 before being incorporated into the Broye district in 1848.
