geography

Vuissens lies at 741  m above sea level. M. , eleven kilometers east-southeast of Yverdon-les-Bains (as the crow flies) and forms an exclave of the canton of Friborg. The former street line village extends in a panoramic location on a high plateau between the valleys of Mentue in the west and Broye in the east, in the western Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of the 5.6 km² municipality covers a section of the Molasse hill country between Mentue and Broye. The Vuissens plateau lies in the headwaters of the Petite Glâne ; towards the north-east it is conceived as the basin of La Râpe . In the west, the area extends into the forest with the source of the Flonzel (side stream of the Ruisseau des Vaux ). To the south, the municipality extends over the forest height of the Grand Bois (at 818  m above sea level the highest point of Vuissens) to the extensive Bois de la Rigne ( 813  m above sea level ), which is the range of hills between Vuissens and the The valley of the Lembe . In the lowland between the Grand Bois and the Bois de la Rigne is the Les Marais moorland . In 1997, 3% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 36% by forests and woodlands and 61% by agriculture.

Vuissens includes the La Râpe farm estate ( 675  m above sea level ) in the valley of the Petite Glâne and some individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Vuissens are Démoret , Champtauroz , Combremont-le-Petit , Denezy , Thierrens and Chanéaz in the canton of Vaud .

population

With 254 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2016), Vuissens was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg. 93.0% of the residents speak French, 3.5% speak Albanian and 2.3% speak German (as of 2000). The population of Vuissens was 247 in 1900. After a peak in 1920 with 292 inhabitants, the population decreased by more than 50% to 142 people by 1980 due to strong emigration. Since then the population has fluctuated around 150 people.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Vuissens was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, arable farming , fruit growing , dairy farming and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Vuissens has a golf course. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who mainly work in the larger towns of the Broye Valley and in Yverdon-les-Bains.

traffic

The community is located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from Prahins to Combremont-le-Grand . Vuissens is connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics Fribourgeois bus line , which serves the hinterland in a circular route from Estavayer-le-Lac .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in the 12th century under the name Guicens . Later the names Vicens (in the 13th century), Vuicens (1403), Wicens (1453), Wissens , Vuiscens (1464), Vuissens (1578) and Vuycens (1668) appeared. The place name goes back to the Burgundian personal name Wika and means with the suffix -ens as much as for the people of Wika .

Since the 12th century Vuissens formed its own rule, which, however, underwent numerous changes of ownership over time and was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . Due to the financial difficulties of the then owner Guillaume de Challant, the castle was taken by Freiburg on March 19, 1461. After negotiations with Freiburg in 1464, Vuissen's rule came back to Savoy through a marriage.

After Bern had conquered the Vaud in 1536, Freiburg again took the rule of Vuissen, but in contrast to the other municipalities, initially did not submit the village to a specific bailiwick. In 1598 the rule was finally passed to Freiburg through purchase. 1608 Vuissens was incorporated into the Vogtei Font . The bailiff, appointed by Freiburg, moved his seat that year to Vuissens Castle and subsequently served in the village until 1798; the bailiwick was given the new name Font-Vuissens . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Vuissens belonged to the Estavayer district until 1803 and then to the Surpierre district before it was incorporated into the Broye district in 1848.

Attractions

The former castle of the Lords of Vuissens, originally from the 13th century, has undergone several changes over the years. After 1803 the castle chapel was demolished and the castle was used as a poor house. So far, no major restorations have been carried out in order to preserve the building fabric. The town center has preserved some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries.
