history

Traces of settlement of the Helvetii , coins and wall remnants from Roman times and burial grounds from the early Middle Ages have been found in the municipality . The first written mention of the place took place in 1154 under the name Donmores . The names Demores (1217), Dummores (1228) and, for the first time, Demoret (1453) appeared later . The place name goes back to the monk Dom Moret (Saint-Maurice).

Since the Middle Ages, the rule of Demoret has been under the lords of Portalban. In 1369 one part of the Démoret rule came to the Lords of Vuissens, the other part to a noble family in Moudon. Later there were numerous other changes of ownership. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Démoret came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Moudon and from then on became the seat of a Meiergericht. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Yverdon district.

Attractions

The reformed parish church of Saint-Maurice, first mentioned in 1228, stands on the foundations of a previous building from the 7th and 8th centuries. Romanesque and Gothic style elements are combined in the church . The rectangular choir dates from the 13th century, while the nave was not built until later in the 15th century.

Since 1675 the rule of Démoret belonged to the Doxat family, who owned two castles in the village. The core of the Château d'En-bas with a square tower dates back to the 16th century, but was later rebuilt and expanded several times. The Château-d'En-haut, which was restored in 1823, is one of the few half-timbered houses in the canton of Vaud. In Démoret there are some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries.
