Ependes is a municipality in the Jura-Nord vaudois district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Ependes is 447 m above sea level. M. , 5 km southwest of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (air line). The clustered village extends slightly higher on the southeastern edge of the Orbe plain , at the foot of the northern foothills of the Gros de Vaud plateau , in the Vaud Central Plateau .
The area of the 4.8 km² municipal area covers a section of the northern Vaud Central Plateau. The larger northern part of the municipality is occupied by the flat Orbe plain ( 435 m above sea level ) and extends over the Canal Oriental (part of the Entreroches Canal ) to the canalized Thielle . To the south, the municipality extends over a steep slope to the plateau north of Suchy, which is subdivided by the valleys of the village stream of Ependes. The highest point of Ependes is 569 m above sea level. M. above the Côtes de Chalamont reached. In 1997, 8% of the municipal area was settled, 14% forest and woodland, 76% agriculture and a little less than 2% was unproductive land.

With 358 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Ependes is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 90.0% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.1% Portuguese-speaking and 2.8% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Ependes amounted to 320 inhabitants in 1850, in 1900 only 249 inhabitants. After the population had meanwhile decreased to 205 inhabitants (1980), a clear increase in population has been registered again since then.
economy
Until the second half of the 20th century, Ependes was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, the have farming and fruit growing an important role in the employment structure of the population. A land area of more than 1 km² has been leased from the Aarberg and Frauenfeld AG sugar factories for the cultivation of sugar beet . There are also several horticultural companies. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. From 1830 to 1971 Ependes was the location of a cheese cooperative. In the past few decades, Ependes has also developed into a residential community. Numerous workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Yverdon .
traffic
The community is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the old main road from Yverdon to Chavornay . The Yverdon-Sud motorway junction on the A1 (Lausanne-Yverdon), which opened in 1981 and crosses the municipality, is around 4 km and the Chavornay junction around 5 km from the town center. On May 7, 1855, the section was Yverdon Belmont-sur-Lausanne railway line Yverdon- Lausanne opened with a station in Ependes.
history
The municipality of Ependes was settled very early, which is attested by prehistoric fortifications on the hill La Poëpe east of the village. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1154 under the name Spinles . Later the names Espinnes (1160), Espindes (1216), Espignes (1227) and Spinnes (1251) appeared. The place name goes back to the Latin word spinas (thorn, thorn bush ).
Ependes has been part of the Belmont rule since the Middle Ages . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon , where it belonged to the Kastlanei Belmont. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Ependes belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Yverdon district.
Attractions
The church, already mentioned in 1228, was under the Premonstratensian Abbey of Lac de Joux ( L'Abbaye ) in the Middle Ages . It was increased in 1787 because of the frequent floods in the Orbe plain. Ependes Castle, an 18th century mansion, is located near the train station.
