La Praz is a municipality in the Jura-Nord vaudois district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
La Praz is at 873 m above sea level. M. , 10 km southwest of Orbe and 20 km southwest of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (linear distance). The farming village extends on the southern slopes of the Jura , in a panoramic position high above the plains of the Vaud Central Plateau .
The area of the 5.1 km² municipal area comprises a section on the southern slopes of the Vaud Jura. The municipal soil extends from the edge of the Prins Bois westward over the cleared island of La Praz and the wooded steep slope ( Côte de la Praz ) to the level of the Jura chain between the Nozon Valley and the Central Plateau . The highest point of the municipality is at 1300 m above sea level. M. near the Chalet Dernier. Here there are extensive Jura high pastures with the typical mighty spruce trees , which either stand individually or in groups. In 1997, 4% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 51% for forests and trees and 45% for agriculture.
Some individual farms belong to La Praz. The neighboring municipalities of La Praz are Juriens , Moiry and Mont-la-Ville .

With 165 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), La Praz is one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 94.9% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.3% German-speaking and 0.9% English-speaking (as of 2000). The population of La Praz was 247 in 1850. After that, strong emigration was recorded until 1970 (102 inhabitants). Since then, the population has increased slightly again.
economy
La Praz is still an agricultural village today , although in the past arable farming predominated in the vicinity of the village , whereas today mainly cattle and dairy farming is practiced. The local small business offers additional jobs. Since La Praz has gradually developed into a residential community over the past few decades, many employed people are commuters.

The community is located off the major thoroughfares, it has connections with the three neighboring villages. La Praz is connected to the public transport network by the Postbus course that runs from Croy to L'Isle .
history
Traces testify to an early settlement of the municipality area. The place was first mentioned in writing in 1330 under its current name. The names Prata (1400) and Lapraz (1867) appeared later . The place name goes back to the Latin word pratum ( meadow , willow ).
La Praz has belonged to the Romainmôtier monastery since the Middle Ages . With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village became part of the Kastlanei and Landvogtei Romainmôtier. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , La Praz belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . It was assigned to the Orbe district in 1798. In 1881 numerous houses fell victim to a village fire.
Attractions
The late classical church of La Praz was built in 1841. In a forest south of the village there is a horseshoe-shaped stone circle with five large and seven smaller mossy stones.
