geography
Vaulion is 932 m above sea level. M. , 12 km west-southwest of Orbe and 22 km west-southwest of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (beeline). The street line village extends in a basin on the upper reaches of the Nozon , in the Vaud Jura at the eastern foot of the Dent de Vaulion .
The area of the 13.2 km² municipal area comprises a section of the Vaud Jura in the headwaters of the Nozon. The western border runs on the chain of Dent de Vaulion, which is 1483 m above sea level. M. forms the highest point of Vaulion. This is followed in the east by the syncline , which lies between the Dent de Vaulion and the side chain of the Mollendruz. In this syncline, the Nozon rises at the foot of a rock face, which crosses the Vaulion basin and then flows through a narrow valley to the Swiss Plateau. There are two caves near the Nozon spring. In the north the border lies at the height of Sur Grati (up to 1177 m above sea level ). In 1997, 3% of the municipal area was in settlements, 47% in forests and woodland, 49% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.
Vaulion includes the hamlets of Nidau ( 880 m above sea level ) on the left side of the Nozon valley and Le Plâne ( 1115 m above sea level ) on the slope of the Vaulion chain above the village, as well as numerous individual farms that are widely scattered on the Jura heights . The neighboring communities of Vaulion are Vallorbe in the north, Premier in the northeast , Romainmôtier-Envy in the east, Juriens in the southeast , Mont-la-Ville in the south and L'Abbaye in the west .

After that, due to strong emigration, a decrease to 358 inhabitants was recorded by 1980, since then the population has increased again slightly.
economy
The village, which was originally shaped by agriculture , concentrated on handicrafts and industrial activity from an early age. Weaving developed at the end of the 16th century, followed by shoemaking in the following century. In the course of the 17th century, a tannery and iron smelting also gained importance. The most important operation in the village was a watch stone grinding company founded in 1888. A mill was in operation until 1970. Today there are numerous jobs in the handicrafts and in local small businesses. Agriculture, mainly cattle and dairy farming , still plays a role in the income structure of the villagers.
tourism
Thanks to a ski lift and a cross-country ski run , Vaulion benefits from its income as a winter sports resort. The Dent de Vaulion is also a popular destination in summer as a panoramic mountain.

Vaulion is on the main road from Orbe via Romainmôtier-Envy and over the Pétra Felix pass into the Vallée de Joux . Vaulion is connected to the public transport network through a postbus course that runs to Croy and partly to Orbe.
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 1097 under the name Vallis Leonis . In the period that followed, the names Val acceleri (1160), Vaullyon and in 1316 the current name Vaulion appeared. This is derived from Val du Lion , because Le Lion was the former name of the Nozon river . Vaulion was probably founded in the 11th century by serfs who fled France . These received the protection of the Prior von Romainmôtier . The original settlement had to be abandoned due to a plague epidemic, and the village was re-established in its current location. Since Vaulion, in contrast to other villages under the Romainmôtier rule, enjoyed relatively generous freedom, the settlement of the valley was encouraged.
With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Vaulion became part of the Kastlanei and Landvogtei Romainmôtier. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , the village belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . It was assigned to the Orbe district in 1798.
