Onnens is a municipality in the Jura-Nord vaudois district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

Onnens is at 477  m above sea level. M. , 7 km northeast of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (linear distance). The village extends on a slight elevation at the southern foot of the Jura , near the west bank of Lake Neuchâtel .

The area of ​​the 5.1 km² municipal area comprises a narrow section on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel. The community soil extends from the flat edge of the bank northwards over the terrace of Onnens and the steep, densely wooded Jura slope ( Bois de Chênes and Bois de Vullierens ) to the ridge of Mont Aubert , on which at 1,300  m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality is reached. The Chassagne nature reserve is located at the foot of Mont Aubert . In 1997, 7% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 49% for forests and woodlands and 44% for agriculture.

Onnens have a few individual farms on the foot and slope of the Jura. Onnens' neighboring communities are Bonvillars and Corcelles-près-Concise .

With 493 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Onnens is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 89.2% of the residents are French-speaking, 4.5% German-speaking and 2.0% Portuguese-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Onnens was 341 in 1900, but then decreased to 223 in 1970. Since then, a significant increase in population has been recorded again.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Onnens was a village mainly characterized by agriculture . Thanks to the fertile soils at the foot of the Jura, agriculture is still very important today. Vines grow on the slopes that are optimally exposed to the sun . There are other jobs in local small businesses. The huge warehouses of Fabriques de tabacs réunies SA built in 1973 stand on the municipal boundary between Onnens and Bonvillars. In the last few decades Onnens has developed into a residential community. Many of the employed people are commuters who work mainly in Yverdon .

traffic

The community has good transport links. It is located on the main road 5 from Neuchâtel to Yverdon . With the opening of the A5 motorway (Yverdon-Neuchâtel) in May 2005, the town experienced a noticeable reduction in traffic congestion. The next connection to the motorway, which crosses the municipality, is around 3 km from the town center. On November 7th, 1859, the railway line from Yverdon to Neuchâtel was inaugurated, the Onnens-Bonvillars station is on the municipal boundary. The bus route from Yverdon to Gorgier provides for the fine distribution in public transport .

history

The municipality of Onnens was already settled during the Neolithic and Bronze Age , which is attested by the remains of stilt houses on the lake shore. Further traces of settlement were found from the Hallstatt and Roman times .

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1228 under the name Unens , whose origin can be traced back to personal names such as Una or Oni . Onnens had belonged to the Grandson estate since the Middle Ages . After 1476 Grandson became a bailiwick under the common rule of Bern and Freiburg . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Onnens belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force .

Attractions

The current building of the Reformed Church of Saint-Martin dates from 1722. The previous building of this church belonged to the Carthusian monastery of La Lance near Concise since the 14th century . The Gothic choir was retained in the new building and was integrated into the church. It shows important wall paintings from the 14th century. In the old town center of the wine-growing village, some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved.
