Essert-sous-Champvent was until December 31, 2011 a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . On January 1, 2012, it merged with Champvent .

geography

Essert-sous-Champvent is 480  m above sea level. M. , four and a half kilometers west-northwest of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains ( linear distance ). The street line village extends on a small ridge on the edge of the Jura foot plateau, in the Vaudois Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the former municipal area of ​​just 1.2 km² covers a section of the northern Vaud Central Plateau. The communal soil extends from a hollow north of the Bey valley northward over the ridge of Essert-sous-Champvent and the valley of the Brine to the edge of the forest clearing Mornens. The highest point of the community is 528  m above sea level. M. below the courtyard of Mornens. In 1997, 9% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 20% by forests and woodlands and 71% by agriculture.

The Clos des Ponts homestead west of the village belongs to Essert-sous-Champvent .

With 154 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011), Essert-sous-Champvent is one of the smallest former municipalities in the canton of Vaud. 71.2% of the residents are French-speaking, 21.2% Portuguese-speaking and 4.6% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Essert-sous-Champvent was 109 in 1850 and 114 in 1900. Thereafter, due to strong emigration, a decrease to 60 inhabitants was recorded by 1980; since then a clear increase in population has been registered again with a doubling of the number of inhabitants within 20 years.

Essert-sous-Champvent still lives mainly from agriculture , especially from arable farming (with extensive vegetable crops), from fruit growing and from viticulture . Some workers are also commuters who work mainly in Yverdon .

The former community is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road from Yverdon to Sainte-Croix . The Yverdon-Ouest motorway junction on the A5 (Yverdon-Grandson) opened in 1984 is around 3 km from the town center. On November 27, 1893, the narrow-gauge railway Chemin de fer Yverdon - Ste-Croix with a station at Essert-sous-Champvent was put into operation. history

The former municipality of Essert-sous-Champvent was already settled in Roman times, which is evidenced by the discovery of wall remains and coins from this time. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1095 under the name Exertas . The place name is derived from exsartum , the past participle of the late Latin word exsarire (to clear, to make arable).

Essert-sous-Champvent was part of the Grandson reign in the High Middle Ages and became part of the Champvent reign in 1225. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon . During the Bernese period it was part of the Montagny-le-Corbe estate . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Essert-sous-Champvent belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force . In 1798 it was assigned to the Yverdon district. Essert-sous-Champvent does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Champvent .
