In the south the area extends into the lowlands of the Le Grandsonnet brook , to the west as far as the Bois des Tassonnières forest . population

With 410 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Giez is one of the small communities in the canton of Vaud. 95.1% of the residents are French-speaking, 3.5% German-speaking and 0.6% speak Albanian (as of 2000). The population of Giez was 294 in 1850 and 289 in 1900. After a period of emigration (211 inhabitants in 1950), a significant increase in population has been recorded, especially in recent years.

economy

Until the middle of the 20th century, Giez was mainly an agricultural village. Even today, thanks to the fertile soils on the Giez plateau, agriculture is still of great importance, and there are also vegetable crops . There are other jobs in local small businesses. In the last few decades Giez has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in nearby Yverdon.

traffic

The community is located away from the major thoroughfares, but can be easily reached via cantonal roads from Yverdon or Grandson . The closest connection to the A5 motorway (Yverdon-Neuchâtel) is around 4 km from the town center. Giez is connected to the public transport network via the Postbus course, which runs from Yverdon to Novalles .

history

The municipality was already settled in Roman times, which is attested by the remains of a villa. In addition, a Burgundian burial ground was discovered. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1011 under the name Gies . In the following years numerous other spellings appeared: Gician (1100), Giei and Gis (1154), Gyz (1179), for the first time Giez (1199), Giacum (1297) and Gye (1364). The place name is traced back to the Gallo-Roman Gaiacum (court of Gaius ).

In the Middle Ages , the Cistercian Abbey of Haut-Crêt and the Romainmôtier Monastery owned land in Giez. The nobles of Giez have been attested since the 12th century. Later the place belonged to the lordship of Grandson and in 1476 served Charles the Bold as an army camp before the Battle of Grandson . After 1476 Grandson became a bailiwick under the common rule of Bern and Freiburg . After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Giez belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force .

Attractions

Today's reformed village church of Saint-Pierre served as the parish church of Grandson until 1438 . Parts of the choir are Romanesque and date from the 11th century. The nave was redesigned in the 15th century; there were further renovations at the end of the 17th century.

Near the church is the castle, which was built for the de Pierre family in the 15th and 16th centuries. It consists of two wings that are connected by a square residential tower and a hexagonal stair tower. The castle, which is still privately owned today, was extensively renovated in 1816. Another interesting building is the Maison des Tourelles with a stair tower from 1635 and other small turrets. In the old town center there are some typical farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries.
