Fontaines-sur-Grandson is a municipality in the Jura-Nord vaudois district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .
geography
Fontaines-sur-Grandson is 563 m above sea level. M. , 6 km north of the district capital Yverdon-les-Bains (as the crow flies). The village extends at the southern foot of the Jura , north of the valley of the river Arnon .
The area of the 7.9 km² municipal area includes a section on the southern slope of the Jura. The municipality extends at the foot of the Jura from the valley of the Arnon in the south-west over the plateau of Fontaines to the village stream of Champagne in the east. To the north, the area extends in a long narrow corner to the crest of the anticlines of the Chasseron chain. It includes the basin of La Calame and part of the height of Les Cernets (at 1,475 m above sea level, the highest point of Fontaines-sur-Grandson). In the northeast, the area of the municipality in the Bois de la Vaux forest area extends into the catchment area of the Bied stream , which flows to the Areuse . The northern border runs on the Crêt des Lisières above Buttes. On the Chasseron chain there are extensive Jura high pastures with the typical mighty spruce trees , which either stand individually or in groups. In 1997, 2% of the municipal area was in settlements, 49% in forests and woodlands, 48% in agriculture and a little less than 1% was unproductive land.
Fontaines-sur-Grandson has a number of individual farms on the Chasseron chain. The neighboring municipalities of Fontaines-sur-Grandson are in the north-north-west an exclave of Fiez , in the north-west Bullet , in the west Grandevent , in the south-west Novalles , in the south-south-west Giez , in the south Fiez, in the south-east Champagne , in the east Tévenon and in the north-east Mauborget in the canton of Vaud and in the north of Val-de-Travers in the canton of Neuchâtel .

With 218 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Fontaines-sur-Grandson is one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the residents, 85.6% are French-speaking, 13.6% German-speaking and 0.8% speak Russian (as of 2000). The population of Fontaines-sur-Grandson was 250 people in 1870, after which it decreased to 147 people by 1950 due to heavy emigration and has remained fairly stable since then.

Fontaines-sur-Grandson was a mainly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . While agriculture is predominantly practiced at the foot of the Jura , cattle and dairy farming predominate on the heights . There are also some jobs in local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in Yverdon.

The community is located off the main thoroughfares on the main road from Grandson to Mauborget . The closest connection to the A5 motorway is around 5 km from the town center. Fontaines-sur-Grandson is connected to the public transport network through the Postbus course that runs from Yverdon to Mauborget.
history
The first written mention of the place took place in 1011 under the name Fontanes . The place name goes back to the numerous sources in the municipality. Fontaines-sur-Grandson came in 1011 as a gift from the Kingdom of Hochburgund to the Romainmôtier monastery . Later, the Benedictine priory of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Fontaines-sur-Grandson owned rich estates. The lords of Grandson held the secular rule. After 1476 Grandson became a bailiwick under the common rule of Bern and Freiburg . It was not until 1730 that the place, which previously belonged to the municipality of Fiez , became an independent municipality. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime , Fontaines-sur-Grandson belonged to the canton of Léman from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic, which then became part of the canton of Vaud when the mediation constitution came into force .
Attractions
In the center of Fontaines-sur-Grandson some farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved. The place belongs to the parish of Fiez .
