Course of the road

The Swiss autobahn 5 and autostrasse 5 - largely congruent with the national road 5 - leads from the A1 south of Yverdon-les-Bains at the southern foot of the Jura via Neuchâtel and Biel / Bienne to Solothurn , where it joins the A1 again at Luterbach .
National road
The sections of the A5 coincide with the N5 national road. The national road is divided into three sections, the projected expansion status of which is specified in the federal decree on the national road network . Sections that are not developed as autobahns or motorways (third-class national road ) are marked as main road 5 .
Sections
Luterbach – Biel East
The Luterbach – Biel Ost section is planned as a second-class national road and implemented as a motorway; the road has been continuously passable since 2002. The section was opened in three stages: During the construction of the N1, the Luterbach junction and the N5 section Luterbach– Zuchwil were created and opened in 1971 together with the adjoining part of the N1. For over 30 years this section served as Solothurn's first motorway slip road .
Only with a view to the state exhibition Expo.02 was the course of the motorway, the planned construction of which had provoked major political disputes up to and including the votes on the so-called clover leaf initiatives in 1990, newly discussed and extended landscape protection goals adapted, especially in the Witischutzzone . After the A5 section Bözingenfeld ( Biel Ost ) - Lengnau had been in operation since May 31, 2001 , the missing section from Lengnau to Zuchwil followed on April 18, 2002 - before the state exhibition opened.
Yverdon – Biel West
The Yverdon – Neuchâtel – Biel West section is planned as a second and third class national road, which means that it is extremely unevenly developed. Between Twann and Le Landeron , the N5 was created as a car road. The N5 section from the Yverdon junction on the A1 to Grandson was opened as a motorway in 1984. On this section is the Yverdon Viaduct , which at 3,155 meters is the longest viaduct in Switzerland.
In the mid-1990s, the continuation of Le Landeron was built under the city of Neuchâtel to connect Neuchâtel Serrières, which was built as a motorway.
In contrast to the Luterbach – Biel section, the A5 between Yverdon and Biel could not be completed at the beginning of Expo.02. However, on May 11, 2002, Hauptstrasse 5 could be routed to the far advanced section of the Vaumarcus - Bevaix motorway (7.5 km). Between Vaumarcus and the Sauges tunnel , the southern carriageway was opened for oncoming traffic, while the tunnel and the section to Bevaix were already being driven in separate directions. On October 20, 2003, the entire section was put into operation as a motorway.
The Areuse enclosure was put into operation on November 28, 2003 in order to enable various finishing works on the surface. Together with the Grandson – Vaumarcus section , the 5.7 km long Bevaix – Areuse section was opened in May 12, 2005, although the latter was partially only passable on one lane until the Chanélaz Viaduct was completed in November 2005.
A section between the semi-connection Auvernier / Neuchâtel Ouest and the connection Serrières, which is to be replaced by the tunnel de Serrières, has remained undeveloped. Due to the high costs and the small benefits, the project has been postponed from the planned completion date in 2006 indefinitely. The N5 in this section, which was expanded as a car road in 1974, is now continuously passable; as it is only a third-class national road and main road 5 is passed over it in this section, it is signposted as a main road with mixed traffic.
Tunnel de Serrières
As an important arterial road in the west of Neuchâtel, Hauptstrasse 5 was expanded as a third-class national road to two lanes as early as 1974 near Auvernier. When the city of Neuchâtel was tunneled under with a motorway in the mid-1990s, the western end of the city tunnel was connected to the expanded section. The subterranean motorway junction Neuchâtel Serrières was created and the half-junction Neuchâtel Ouest at the tunnel portal, which had the function of threading the main road into and out of the new national road. When the Areuse enclosure was put into operation in November 2003, it was connected at its eastern end to the upgraded line at Auvernier. Here, too, the Auvernier half-connection was only given the function. to interweave or disentangle the main road with the national road.
The fact that connecting two directionally separate motorways via a main road with mixed traffic does not make sense was already taken into account when planning the Grandson – Areuse – Neuchâtel section. Due to the topography and spatial conditions, the section in question was designed as an approximately 800 meter long tunnel and approved in January 2001.
The complex tunnel project, which had to be partially drilled in the Jura limestone below the level of Lake Neuchâtel , was not started with the other sections of the motorway, as various parties were calling for a more economical solution to the existing section of the motorway. Due to the delays, construction only began on March 23, 2009, and commissioning took place in March 2014.
Biel East - West bypass (Biel south bypass)
The Biel East section (Bözingenfeld junction) - Biel West is planned as a second-class urban national road and will be one of the last completed sections of the Swiss national road network. The so-called Biel bypass consists of two branches: The east branch between Bözingenfeld and Port (Brüggmoos junction) is built as a motorway. The west branch between Port (Brüggmoos junction) and Biel West runs as a motorway through the city of Biel to Seevorstadt, from there a road tunnel is planned as a bypass from Vingelz to Rusel quarry. The two branches are linked at the Brüggmoos junction near Port, into which the still-to-be-built A6 (formerly T6) road will be integrated.
East branch
The east branch in Bözingenfeld connects to the existing A5 from Solothurn and A16 from Jura and leads from there through the Büttenberg tunnel to Orpund , where there is a full connection. From there it continues through the Längholz tunnel to the Brüggmoos junction, where there is a connection to the A6 motorway towards Bern and Bernstrasse towards Biel Zentrum. There is also the semi-connection Biel Süd there.
Construction of the east branch began in December 2007 and the traffic handover took place on October 27, 2017.
West branch
The project for the construction of the west branch was approved by the Federal Council in September 2014 ; The competent federal office specifies the year 2030 as the possible completion date. As part of the plan in spring 2017, however, the Bernese Heimatschutz, the Foundation for Landscape Protection Switzerland and Helvetia Nostra questioned the environmental compatibility of the construction project and described it as “not approvable”. In addition, sections of the population in the city of Biel are resisting the two open motorway junctions in the middle of the city and are demanding that the section be reclassified to a 3rd class national road in accordance with the following section from Biel (West) to Twann.
