history

The area around Thielle was already settled in the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. Since the Celtic period in the 1st century BC At Thielle there was an important crossing over the Zihl, a Roman bridge was renewed several times.

The first written mention of the place Thielle took place in 1153 under the names de Tela and Thela , while Wavre was first mentioned in 1179 as Wavra . Both places belonged to the county of Neuchâtel since the 14th century. They were part of the Thielle Burgvogtei, which was responsible for judicial affairs in the region from the 14th century to 1848. From 1648 Neuchâtel was a principality and from 1707 it was linked to the Kingdom of Prussia through personal union. In 1806 the area was ceded to Napoleon I and came to the Swiss Confederation in the course of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 , whereby the kings of Prussia until the Neuchâtel trade in 1857 also remained princes of Neuchâtel. In 1888 the two previously independent communities Thielle and Wavre were merged into an administrative unit. As part of the first Jura water correction in 1894, the Zihl was straightened. An exchange of land was carried out between the cantons of Neuchâtel and Bern, whereby the castle and the former customs house came to be in the canton of Bern (municipality of Gals ). At the beginning of August 1939 the 1st Naturist "Olympic Games" took place in Thielle .
