traffic

Vaumarcus has good traffic connections. It is located near the main road 5 from Neuchâtel to Yverdon . With the construction of the A5 motorway (Neuchâtel-Yverdon), which was opened to traffic in May 2005, the bank area at Vaumarcus underwent massive changes; the motorway here runs just a few meters from the shores of Lake Neuchâtel . On November 7, 1859, the Neuchâtel – Yverdon railway line was inaugurated with a station in Vaumarcus; However, the train only runs twice a day in the direction of Neuchâtel: in the morning and in the evening. The place is better developed by a bus line that runs between Gorgier and Yverdon.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1194 under the name Vallis Margult , and in 1228 the name Valmarcuel appeared . Margult can probably be traced back to the Germanic personal name Markold or Markwald . The history of the place is closely related to that of Vaumarcus Castle, which was mentioned as early as 1285. In 1308 the poorly maintained castle came to the Counts of Neuchâtel , who restored it. Because the lord of the castle, who belonged to a sideline of the Counts of Neuchâtel, gave shelter to Charles the Bold , the castle was set on fire in 1476 after the Battle of Grandson .

From 1599 Johann-Ulrich von Bonstetten , married to Anne von Neuenburg-Vaumarcus, was at the head of the rule that had been raised to baron four years earlier . From 1675 onwards she was taken over by the descendants of David von Büren (1614–1695) and his wife, a née von Bonstetten, until the fiefdom was replaced in 1831.

From 1648 Neuchâtel was a principality and from 1707 it was linked to the Kingdom of Prussia through personal union. In 1806 the area was ceded to Napoleon I and came to the Swiss Confederation in the course of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 , whereby the kings of Prussia until the Neuchâtel trade in 1857 also remained princes of Neuchâtel.

In 1875 the previously independent municipality of Vernéaz was merged with Vaumarcus to form the municipality of Vaumarcus-Vernéaz . In 1966 there was a return to the old community name Vaumarcus , which was lost in the merger with Vernéaz in 1875 .

Attractions

Vaumarcus Castle stands on a ledge above the valley of the La Vaux stream. It was rebuilt after 1476. The newer part of the castle with a large terrace was added in 1773. The castle, which was extensively restored in the middle of the 20th century, now houses the municipal administration and also serves as a gastronomic and cultural center. Vaumarcus does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Saint-Aubin-Sauges .
