Peseux is a municipality in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland .

geography

Peseux lies at 543  m above sea level. M. , 3 km west of the canton capital Neuchâtel (linear distance). The community extends on a terrace on the southern slope of the Jura , in a panoramic position around 120 m above the lake level of Lake Neuchâtel .

The area of ​​the 3.4 km² municipal area includes a section on the southern slope of the foremost Jura chain. The communal soil extends from the terrace of Peseux northwards up the wooded slope ( Forêt de Peseux ) to the anticline that borders the Val de Ruz in the south. In the west the area extends to the height of Serroue (at 805  m above sea level, the highest point of Peseux), in the east partially to the edge of the Gorges du Seyon, the clumpy breakthrough valley of the Seyon through the Jura chain. In 1997, 27% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 70% for forests and woodlands and 3% for agriculture.

With 5813 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Peseux is one of the largest municipalities in the canton of Neuchâtel in terms of population. Of the residents, 82.9% are French-speaking, 4.0% Italian-speaking and 3.9% German-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Peseux increased particularly in the period from 1900 to 1970. Thereafter, a downward trend was observed for some time. Continuous but slow growth has been recorded again since 1990. The settlement area of ​​Peseux has merged seamlessly with those of the neighboring communities Neuchâtel and Corcelles-Cormondrèche.

On December 1, 1859, the Neuchâtel - La Chaux-de-Fonds railway line was inaugurated with a station near Peseux. The bus line from Neuchâtel via Les Ponts-de-Martel to Le Locle and the means of transport of Transports en commun de Neuchâtel et environs , including line 1 of the Neuchâtel trolleybus, provide for the fine distribution of public transport .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1191 under the name Pusus . In the following years numerous other spellings appeared: Pusoz (1195), Posoys (1277), Poysous (1281), Pusue (1289), Pisuel (1356), Pisoul (1373), Pissuex (1403), Peseulx (1416), Puseux ( 1437), Pissouz (1439), Pusieux (1465) and finally 1466 the current name. The place name probably goes back to the Latin word puteus ( well , cistern ).

Peseux has been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Neuchâtel since the 13th century. From 1648 Neuchâtel was a principality and from 1707 it was linked to the Kingdom of Prussia through personal union. In 1806 the area was ceded to Napoleon I and came to the Swiss Confederation in the course of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 , whereby the kings of Prussia until the Neuchâtel trade in 1857 also remained princes of Neuchâtel. The community belonged to the Mairie La Côte until 1848, and since then to the Boudry district.

Attractions

The reformed church of Peseux has a tower from 1737, the nave is from 1899. In the old town center there are numerous characteristic town houses from the 17th and 18th centuries; some of them show the style of the late Renaissance . The castle is a stately mansion with three polygonal towers built from 1531 to 1574.
