White protection zone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Witischutzzone is a cantonal agricultural and protection zone north of the Aare river between Grenchen and Solothurn in the Swiss canton of Solothurn . "Witi" is a Solothurn dialect and synonymous with "width".

The zone was legally established in 1994. It is located in an area of scenic beauty, is a migratory bird and water bird reserve of international importance and houses the rabbit chamber of Switzerland , an above-average rabbit population. The largest area of it is the Grenchenwiti . The protection zone may only be farmed extensively . Conflicts of use also exist in the area of leisure activities, which attempts are being made to resolve regulatory issues in the sense of a compromise ( concentration of recreational use ). In certain areas, the protection of nature has priority; attempts are being made to enforce this consistently.

history

The Witi landscape is originally a product of the last ice age , when the entire area was covered with ice by the Rhone glacier . When this retreated when it warmed up, Lake Solothurn was created around 12,000 years ago , the level of which was around 20 meters above today's Witi. When the Solothurnersee retreated, the Witi remained along with the Aare as its lake bed. Up until the correction of the Jura waters , the area was a frequently flooded meadow and marsh landscape, where agriculture was only possible under difficult conditions.

In the 1960s, the intention was for a certain time to build a thermal, oil-fired power plant in the Grenchner Witi near Staad .

During the construction of the A5 autobahn , after long debates, it was possible to largely tunnel under Grenchenwiti.

Ornithology

In the period 1980 to 1995, 97 breeding bird species were observed in the Witi , 37 of which were on the Swiss Red List of extinct species, as well as 150 migrating and winter guest species. Due to the frequent puddles of water in the cultivated land, the Witi developed into the third most important Limikolen resting place in Switzerland. It is noteworthy that the majestic osprey is also observed relatively often, preferably in spring, as a migrant; some of the birds even sleep on the banks of the Aare . The black stork is also an irregular migrant , with the animals occasionally and temporarily staying in the white stork enclosure of the Altreu stork settlement . In the Altreuer Witi often also conspicuous by their beautiful singing adheres as a breeding bird Nightingale on.
