geography
Staad is 425 m above sea level. M., 12 km west-southwest of the canton capital Solothurn (air line). The village is located south of Grenchen on the north bank of the Aare . Rüti BE is the southern neighboring community on the other side of the Aare.
history
In the Middle Ages, Staad was a fishing village that also supplied Grenchen and Bettlach with its catch; a fish tithe also existed. A map from 1875 (from Siegfried Atlas) proves that the village (still written as "Stad" - old language for place on the bank -) was already incorporated into Grenchen at that time. It also shows that the size of the settlement is not very different from the current situation. Around 1875 there was a small ferry that crossed the Aare to Rüti. In addition, the forest was already heavily felled by this time, and agriculture was also practiced.
chapel
The Staad chapel was built in 1715 and was consecrated to St. Nicholas . It was expanded in 1980/81. In the winged altar there is a Gothic masterpiece by Peter Kallenberg from Bern from 1522.
tourism
Staad is located on the Biel-Solothurn bicycle and canoe route and has a small campsite, a restaurant and a bus connection (on-call bus) to Grenchen. In addition, numerous bathers come to the Sandloch (an easily accessible bathing resort on the Aare) every year in warm weather.
