Mehmet Şimşek

Mehmet Şimşek (born January 1, 1967 in Gercüş , Batman , Turkey ) is a Turkish politician of Kurdish descent who was Deputy Prime Minister in the cabinet of Binali Yıldırım .

Life

In 1988 he began studying economics at Ankara University and in 1990 was offered a scholarship to study in England. After completing his studies, he stayed in England and completed a master's degree at the University of Exeter in 1993 .

In the following years he worked for various companies such as UBS , Deutsche Bank and, most recently, Merrill Lynch . In the 2007 parliamentary elections, he was elected as a candidate for the AKP in the Gaziantep constituency and was appointed Minister of State after the election. He is responsible for the Treasury and the Turkish Central Bank .

Şimşek was Turkey's Finance Minister under Prime Ministers Erdoğan and Davutoğlu .

Şimşek was Deputy Prime Minister until the beginning of July 2018 and was regarded by international investors as a guarantor of good economic development and was counted among the followers of orthodox economics. Şimşek was replaced by Erdogan's son-in-law Berat Albayrak as the authority on financial and economic issues .

Private life

On January 8, 2010, Mehmet Şimşek married for the second time. His first wife was an American. His second wife Esra Kara is a Turkish architect.

Şimşek has both Turkish and British citizenship.
