Mehmet Zafer Çağlayan

Mehmet Zafer Çağlayan (born November 15, 1957 in Muş ) is a Turkish mechanical engineer of Kurdish origin , industrialist, politician and former minister in the Erdoğan III cabinet .

He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering Department) at Gazi University in Ankara . Then Çağlayan worked as an industrialist. In 1987 he became a council member of the Association of Industrialists in Ankara. In 1989 he was appointed as a member of the association's governing body. In 1991 he became vice chairman of the association and in 1995 chairman. Çağlayan held this position until 2007. He was Deputy President of the Chamber and Exchange Association of Turkey ( TOBB ) three times . Zafer Çağlayan was a member of the administrative committee of TOBB University.

Çağlayan became a member of the second cabinet of the AKP government under Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on August 29, 2007 , in which he was Minister of Industry and Trade until May 1, 2009 and then Minister of State for Foreign Trade. After the parliamentary elections in 2011 , he became Minister of Economics in the Erdoğan III cabinet . He resigned in December 2013 as a result of the 2013 corruption scandal in Turkey .

In December 2017, the Turkish-Iranian gold trader Reza Zarrab pleaded guilty to bribing Caglayan with around seven million US dollars in a trial in a US court. Zarrab appeared as a witness. The then Prime Minister Erdogan agreed to illegal business in 2012; the Turkish banker Mehmet Hakan Atilla had enabled Iran to conduct illegal business in violation of US sanctions.

Çağlayan is married and has two children.
