Mehmet Mehdi Eker (born January 1, 1956 in Bismil County, Diyarbakır Province ) is a Turkish veterinarian, politician and former Minister of Agriculture.

Professional background

Eker graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ankara University and received his Masters in Agricultural Economics from Aberdeen University . Eker received his doctorate from the Institute of Health Sciences at Ankara University. He was Deputy Director of the Central Animal Husbandry Institute in Lalahan, Director of Veterinary Affairs at Istanbul City Council , Deputy Director General of Agricultural Production and Development in the Ministry of Agriculture, Director General of Protection and Control, and Secretary of State.

From 2002 to 2015, Eker was an AKP MP for Diyarbakır Province in the 22nd , 23rd and 24th legislative periods of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey . From March 14, 2003 to August 28, 2015, he served as Minister of Agriculture in the Erdoğan I , II and III and Davutoğlu I cabinets . During the avian flu epidemic of 2005, he made a statement that it was safe to eat cooked chicken. However, he publicly withdrew this statement on television.

On March 17, 2017, Eker was banned from political activity for the state of Lower Saxony on the basis of Section 47 of the Residence Act . The decisive factor was a planned election campaign appearance in Hanover , with which he wanted to attract approval for the constitutional referendum of April 2017 .
