Beşir Atalay (born April 1, 1947 in Keskin County, Kırıkkale Province ) is a Turkish sociologist, university professor, politician and former interior minister.

Atalay began his studies at the Faculty of Law at Ankara University . Atalay wrote his master's and doctoral theses at the Faculty of Business Administration at Ataturk University in Erzurum .

Atalay was a professor at Ataturk University, Marmara University and visiting professor at the University of Michigan . In 1983 Atalay became a lecturer in sociology. Atalay was the founding rector of Kırıkkale University. He worked as coordinator of the Center for Social Investigations in Ankara and as division head in the Office for State Planning and as a member of the national UNESCO commission.

Atalay was a member of the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP) for the province of Ankara in the 22nd legislative period of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey . He was also Minister of State in the 58th ( Gül Cabinet ) and 59th ( 1st Erdoğan Cabinet ) government of the Republic of Turkey. Atalay had been a member of the Second Erdoğan Cabinet of the AKP government under Erdoğan since August 29, 2007 , in which he served as Interior Minister until March 8, 2011. In the Erdoğan III cabinet he has been one of several deputies to the Prime Minister since 2011.

Atalay is married and has three children. He speaks English.
