The Marmara University Istanbul ( Turkish : Marmara Üniversitesi ) is a state university in Istanbul and with 62,000 students the second largest university in Turkey.

The university is named after the Sea of ​​Marmara near Istanbul and was only founded as a university in 1982, but its teaching and research activities are based on, among other things, Istanbul universities from 1883. The courses are offered in four languages ​​( Turkish , English , German , French ). There are 13 locations, 104 courses, 11 institutes, 8 universities, 28 research centers.

In May 2005, the then German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder was awarded an honorary doctorate from the university in a festive ceremony .
