The Sabancı University ( English Sabancı University ) is a private university with more than 4000 students and 388 faculty members (2015), which was founded in 1996 by the Turkish industrial family Sabancı in Istanbul . However, it did not start studying until 1999. This makes the university one of 193 universities in Turkey, around half of which are privately financed. The establishment of private universities has been allowed in Turkey since 1984. The language of instruction is English.
In 2015 it was ranked 182nd according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In 2015, the British weekly university magazine included three universities in Turkey that were founded no more than 50 years ago in the list of the top 100 universities. From Turkey, Sabancı University came in 13th, Bilkent University in 28th and Koç University in 51st.
The director is the physicist and chemist Nihat Berker .
There are the two faculties of Engineering and Natural Sciences ( Engineering and Natural Sciences , FENS) and Arts and Social Sciences ( Arts and Social Sciences , FASS), the Sabancı School of Management . In addition, the Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center (SUNUM) has existed since 2011 . The information center , a kind of expanded university library , was inspired by Ottoman architecture and houses more than 300,000 printed works.
