history

The university was founded on October 20, 1984 by İhsan Doğramacı . However, the first preparations for the founding of the university were made in 1967.

The first students were admitted in 1986. 386 students were registered this year. Today the university has more than 12,000 students in nine faculties. Foreign students come from 72 countries. The university is also known for awarding more than 2,500 full scholarships each year.

According to the World University Rankings 2010/2011 of the Times Higher Education , the University was at that time the world's number 112 and was the best Turkish university. The ranking for 2014/15 saw them in positions 201 to 225 worldwide and thus in fifth place among Turkish universities.

The language used in the university is English . The only exceptions are language courses and Turkish law in the law faculty .

İhsan Doğramacı has achieved a long-cherished goal by founding the university. Before it was founded, he was also involved in setting up other public universities, including as rector of Ankara University , chairman of the supervisory board of the Technical University of the Middle East and first rector of Hacettepe University .
