The İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi ( German : Istanbul Bilgi University ) is a private university with currently 11,000 students in Istanbul . In Turkey , it has a special position as an independent institution thanks to its liberal research.

history

The Bilgi Education and Culture Foundation first established the Istanbul School of International Studies (ISIS) on October 31, 1994 . The aim was to reorganize an outdated higher education system by founding a private university at which research should be carried out independently of the state and institutions. This university should focus on:

  • Foreign languages, social science and natural science
  • Link between culture and science based on respect and tolerance
  • Organization of seminars, conferences, meetings etc. for critical discussion of (historical) topics
  • Support for people or institutions that promote cultural activities

On June 7, 1996, the Istanbul Bilgi University was finally founded, which with its liberal view plays a special role. Since it was founded, the number of its students has risen to 11,000. Since 2006 the university has operated a joint venture with the American education group Laureate Education .

research

The University of Bilgi sees the satisfaction of an individual and society as the basis of progressive research. The university is known for its liberal research and wants to encourage free thinking and creativity. She sees free access to education and science as a fundamental human right. In addition to the offers of the regular faculties, the university operates several special research areas such as B. the Center for Migration Research , the Human Rights Law Research Center or the Social, Economic and Political Research Center . As part of research in these areas, various conferences have already been held at the university that dealt with critical issues in Turkish society, such as: B. the discussion about the genocide of the Armenians between 1915 and 1917. The language of instruction is generally English, the only exception being the law faculty with Turkish-language courses.

In addition to the language of instruction and the cooperation with foreign universities in Germany, France, England and the USA, memberships in networks such as the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) indicate the international orientation of the Bilgi University. The university is a member of the European University Association (EUA), the International Association of Universities (IAU) and the OECD / IMHE.

The University of Bilgi is run by 9 curators who elect a rector every four years. The university has a total of five faculties, five technical colleges and five institutes with graduate programs.

As a private university, most of the funding comes from tuition fees. The cost per course is $ 1,400, so fees for one semester can run up to $ 10,000. The university provides poorer students with a scholarship, so that the composition is less homogeneous compared to state universities. In addition to the (Turkish) Abitur, an IELTS or TOEFL test is an admission requirement.

Libraries and museums

Bilgi has two libraries, one in Dolapdere and one on the Kuştepe campus. Furthermore, the establishment of the largest library in Turkey on the campus in Santralistanbul is planned. A modern art museum is located next to the planned library. A virtual library, which the students can also access from off-campus via the Internet, contains 25,000 e-books, 23,000 scientific journals, 37 databases and encyclopedias.

location

Istanbul Bilgi University is divided into three campuses. The campuses are located on the European side of Istanbul in the districts of Kuştepe (main campus), Dolapdere and Santral at the end of the Golden Horn. The modern campuses were deliberately relocated to poorer parts of the city in order to illustrate the contrast between rich and poor or between tradition and modernity.
