The Silahtarağa Elektrik Santralı (German: Silahtarağa power plant ) was a coal-fired power plant in Istanbul . It was the first power station of the Ottoman Empire and was in operation from 1914 to 1983. The buildings now serve as the campus of İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi and house two museums and various cultural and educational institutions. They were renovated in the 2000s and reopened in 2007 as "Santralistanbul".

history

Apart from a smaller hydroelectric power station near Tarsus from 1902, the power station was the first of its kind in the Ottoman Empire. The Hungarian gas and electricity company Ganz was supposed to build the power plant. In 1910, Osmanlı Anonim Elektrik Şirketi was founded in cooperation with two Belgian banks, the Banque de Bruxelles and the Banque Generale de Credit Hongrois . The new company received a 50-year license and was the first to build a coal-fired power plant in the Silahtarağa district of Istanbul's Eyüp district at the upper end of the Golden Horn .

On February 11, 1914, the plant went into operation and supplied energy for the tram and later also for the Sultan's Palace . It was supplied with coal from 1916 by the Haliç – Karadeniz field railway . In 1937 the company was nationalized and from July 1, 1938 belonged to the city of Istanbul. It was operated by "İstanbul Elektrik Tramvay ve Tünel" ( İETT ). The Silahtarağa power plant remained the only power plant in Istanbul until the 1950s. In 1952 the power plant was connected to the national grid. From 1962 it was owned by Etibank and was then slammed into Türkiye Elektrik Kurumu (TEK) in 1970 .

The Silahtarağa power plant initially had three 6 MW generators. The capacity was later increased to 80 MW.

On March 13, 1983, the power plant was shut down because it was no longer profitable to operate. The building stood empty for about 20 years and fell into disrepair. In 1991 it was included in the "List of Cultural and Natural Monuments of the City of Istanbul" and thus placed under monument protection.

Redevelopment

In 2002 the entrepreneur and founder of Bilgi Üniversitesi Oğuz Özerden presented a renovation plan for the building complex. Part of the project was to use the building as a university campus. In addition, two new museums should move in: a museum for modern art and an energy museum. The project was implemented in three years after approval by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. The financing was taken over by Turkish companies.

The building complex was given the new name Santralistanbul after the Turkish word Santral ( Eng . Power plant) . The opening was celebrated on September 8, 2007. In addition to the two museums, a public library was built for the university, as well as lecture halls and several smaller rooms for art and cultural events.
