Suraiya N. Faroqhi (born October 2, 1941 in Berlin ) is a German orientalist with a focus on Ottoman studies . She is considered a specialist in the history of the Ottoman Empire .

Life

She was born in Berlin in 1941 to a German mother and an Indian father. After graduation in 1959 at the Catholic Liebfrauenschule Bonn , she studied history , Turkish Studies and Middle Eastern studies at the University of Hamburg , the Istanbul University and the Indiana University Bloomington ( English as a Second Language , Master of Arts for Teachers). In 1970 she was at the Department of Historical Sciences of the University of Hamburg with a dissertation The templates <telhise> Grand Vizier Sinān Paša at Sultan Murād III to Dr. phil. PhD.

She first worked from 1967 to 1968 as a German and English teacher at the Rackow Business School and then worked in the university sector in Turkey and the USA. In 1980 she became a University Doçenti . From 1981 to 1986 she was Associate Professor at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara. In 1982 a private lecturer at the University of Bochum followed . In 1984 she was a visiting lecturer at Harvard University and from 1986 to 1987 professor in the Department of History at the Middle East Technical University.

From 1988 to 2007 she was professor for Ottoman studies at the Institute for History and Culture of the Near East and for Turkish Studies at the University of Munich . From 2002 to 2007 she headed the institute. In 2007 she was Harris Distinguished Visiting Professor at Dartmouth College and in the same year became Professor of History at İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi . From 2010 to 2011 she was Chairperson of the History Department. After retiring from İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi (Bilgi University) (2017) she became a professor at İbn Haldun Üniversitesi Istanbul.

She has received several scholarships (including the German National Academic Foundation and the Berlin Science College) and has been a guest at numerous universities and research institutions (Ankara, Oxford, Âl al-Bayt University, Jordan, Istanbul, Aix-en-Provence, Moscow, Minneapolis-St Paul, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and Berlin). From 1990 to 1993 she was on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Middle East Studies and since 1996 on the Editorial / Advisory Board of Turcica . She was also a member of the Advisory Board of the International Institute for Social History from 1994 to 1998 .

Faroqhi's brother was the filmmaker Harun Farocki .
