English as a second language

English as a Second Language ( English as a Second Language , abbreviated ESL ) is a term of former immigrants in English-speaking countries and the inhabitants of colonies is used where English as official language or main language of communication applies.

There is now an American podcast on learning English as a Second Language Podcast . It is produced by the Center for Educational Development in Los Angeles.

The term is not applied to learning the English language in the German-speaking area. Here one speaks of English as a foreign language ( EFL , E nglish as a F oreign L anguage).
