history
The region around the large granite rock , Stone Mountain , has been a meeting place for the indigenous people for thousands of years . After the First Treaty of Indian Springs of 1821, the area was also released for settlement by Europeans and was also named Stone Mountain in 1847 based on the granite rocks . After the commissioning of railway lines, including to Augusta , the city, whose inhabitants were mainly active in agriculture, experienced an initial boom. Because of a re-establishment of the Ku Klux Klan in 1915 , the place attracted public attention. The passage “ let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! “(Let freedom ring out from Stone Mountain of Georgia) in Martin Luther King's I-Have-a-Dream speech should come in response. When in 1970 a relief on the granite rock, which shows three personalities of the Confederate States of America : President Jefferson Davis and the Generals Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee , was completed, the place experienced a strong tourist boom.
As part of the 1996 Summer Olympics , tennis , archery and track cycling competitions were held in nearby Stone Mountain Park .
Following a popular tradition, the Yellow Daisy Festival takes place in Stone Mountain every year. It got its name after the black-eyed rudbeckia ( Rudbeckia hirta ) (English: Yellow Daisy ), which is one of the rudbeckia and occurs in large numbers in the area.
