Donald Glover
Donald Glover (born September 25, 1983 at Edwards Air Force Base , California ) is an American actor , comedian , screenwriter , musician and director . Musically he is known by his stage name Childish Gambino . Among other things, he is a two-time Golden Globe and Emmy award winner and a five-time Grammy award winner.
Life
Glover grew up in the city of Stone Mountain near Atlanta in the US state of Georgia in a family of Jehovah's Witnesses on. He attended Rockbridge Elementary School and the DeKalb School of the Arts in DeKalb County . He then studied dramatic writing at the Tisch School of the Arts . In 2006 he graduated from there.
He has two sons with his partner.
Career
actor
Glover started writing for the American television show The Daily Show in 2005 . From 2006 to 2009 he was one of the writers on the NBC television series 30 Rock . In 2007 the series was nominated by the Writers Guild of America for Best Comedy Series and Best New Series. In 2008, 2009 and 2010 he and his colleagues won in the "Best Comedy Series" category.
Glover is a member of the YouTube sketch group Derrick Comedy with Dominic Dierkes, Meggie McFadden, DC Pierson and Dan Eckman. In 2009 the group produced the film Mystery Team .
Since 2005 Glover has also worked as an actor, initially mainly in short films. In 2009, Glover began starring in NBC's Community , a sitcom about a group of students at a community college. Glover played Troy Barnes, who played football in high school and studied at Greendale Community College in Colorado . In season five, Glover only appeared in five episodes and then left the series.
Glover has been developing the music comedy series Atlanta for the television channel FX since 2013 , which has been broadcast since September 2016.
In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year. That same year he received an Emmy and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his lead role in the drama series Atlanta , which he also directed and wrote on the screenplay .
In the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story , the second offshoot of the Star Wars Anthology film series , Donald Glover plays the role of the young Lando Calrissian . In the music magazine Rolling Stone, Sassan Niasseri praised Glover's acting with the words: "Glover's Lando Calrissian has an authority that Ehrenreich (actor of Han Solo) lacks."
Musician
Donald Glover also works as a musician. He raps under the name Childish Gambino. According to his own statements, he got this name from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator. In his music, Glover addresses and criticizes consumption, social polarization, violence and the everyday life of many African Americans between racism and poverty.
On June 5, 2008, Glover released his first album Sick Boi . His second album Poindexter was released on September 17th, 2009. In 2010 he produced the mixtapes I Am Just A Rapper and I Am Just A Rapper 2 . Also in 2010, Glover released his third album, Culdesac . His fourth album Camp was released on November 15, 2011 on Glassnotes Records. It was his first album that wasn't released for free download. As a DJ “mcDJ” he also makes electronic music and often mixes new music. His projects include Love Letter in an Unbreakable Bottle , Utterances of the Heart , Fuck Yaselves, and The Works .
His second album Because the Internet is a concept album , which includes the short film Clapping for the Wrong Reasons and a script in which the music is intended to accompany the individual scenes. Childish Gambino gave his first Germany concert on February 15, 2014 in Berlin. The third studio album “Awaken, My Love!” was released on December 2, 2016 and is musically classified as funk , soul and R&B . At the Grammy Awards 2018 he received two nominations for the album and three for the song Redbone . It won the award in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category .
His biggest hit in 2018 was the song This Is America , which was not only the most successful internationally and reached number 1 in the USA , it was also awarded four Grammy Awards , including a single and song of the year.
