action

The loner Earnest “Earn” Marks lives aimlessly into the day after dropping out of his studies at the elite Princeton University and returns to his hometown of Atlanta . He keeps himself afloat with minimum wage jobs to pay the rent, send his daughter to a decent school and to be able to invite her mother, his long-time friend Van, to a restaurant every now and then. Earn soon becomes the manager of his cousin Alfred Miles in Atlanta, who calls himself the rapper Paper Boi and who achieved a surprise hit, which is why he is well on his way to starting a career. Alfred is a cozy guy who is skeptical about fame and prefers to lie stoned on the couch than partying in nightclubs with scantily clad girls. Darius becomes Alfred's right hand and works with him on the music.

Reviews

The first season of the series was able to convince all 64 critics at Rotten Tomatoes . Also went Atlanta from the 18th Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the categories of Best New TV Show in 2016 and Best TV Comedy in 2016 emerged as the winner. From the American Film Institute was Atlanta in the top 10 list of the November 2016 AFI TV Programs of the Year added.

Daniel Gerhardt from Die Zeit thinks that Glover portrays the hip-hop scene in his hometown realistically and lovingly in the series . In addition to a knowingly compiled soundtrack and guest appearances in which various rappers satirize their previous jobs, he also used the aptly exaggerated machinations of local rap blogs, radio stations and labels. The series, according to Gerhardt, shows Glover's path to a legitimate rap biography, but also deals with how its protagonists nevertheless fought for normality. Glover's core message of a black experience is unmistakable, however , in that he shows the diversity of black realities and thereby also makes peace with his own biography.

Jürgen Schmieder of the Süddeutsche Zeitung believes that the series comes closer to the life of African Americans in the United States than almost any other. Because Earl and Alfred are too busy trying to survive today, they can't worry about tomorrow or the big picture. Schmieder explains about the structure of the series that individual episodes deal exclusively with individual characters and their inner workings, the recurring word “ nigger ” drums itself into the viewer's brain as a rhythm, the subjects of poverty and violence are the melody and the bittersweet dialogues of the protagonists are the verses a melancholy rap song that apparently became a television series by accident.

Nina Rehfeld from Spiegel Online thinks that series like Atlanta changed American television because they take the perspective of Afro-American heroes and main characters and try to depict African-American realities on television without make-up, without being shaped by a ghetto aesthetic. The opposite is the case, says Rehfeld: "In addition to enormous narrative talent, there is a great sense of a visual atmosphere that conveys authenticity and a sense of home."
