NAACP Image Award
The NAACP Image Award is a prize given annually by the American National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for outstanding achievements in the fields of film , television , music and literature by African Americans .
Similar to the Oscars or the Grammys , the winners are chosen, in this case by members of the NAACP. The Image Award is currently presented in 35 categories. There are also honorary awards such as the President's Award , the Chairman's Award , Entertainer of the Year and the Image Award Hall of Fame .
The prize was first awarded in 1969; the award ceremony has been televised since 1974. Today this happens through the transmitter FOX . The ceremony usually takes place in February or early March at various locations in or near Los Angeles .

controversy
The Image Award has been the subject of various controversies, in that, in the opinion of critics, some nominees did not deserve this recognition by the NAACP. In 1994, for example, Tupac Shakur was nominated for best actor in the film Poetic Justice , even though he was charged with sexually abusing a woman in December 1993. In 2004, R. Kelly was nominated for his album Chocolate Factory , despite being charged with child pornography at the time. Kelly was later acquitted on all charges. The main piece of evidence was a videotape that was supposed to show him and the youngsters. Kelly and the alleged victim successfully denied being the people depicted in the process.
In 2003, the film Barbershop received five nominations, including Cedric the Entertainer for Best Supporting Actor. The film has been criticized for making unflattering comments about the character Cedric the Entertainer in it about Rosa Parks , Martin Luther King and Jesse Jackson . The situation was similar with the rap group OutKast , which received six nominations in 2004 despite the fact that they had recorded a song called Rosa Parks and had been sued by Parks for the unauthorized use of their name.
