The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is a concert venue in Los Angeles , California . The building bears the name of the American publisher , art patron and collector Dorothy Buffum Chandler . Since 1986 the house has been the seat and venue of the Los Angeles Opera .

The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is one of the four event buildings of the Los Angeles Music Center , one of the three largest centers for the performing arts in the United States. The Los Angeles Music Center also includes the Mark Taper Forum , the Ahmanson Theater , and the Walt Disney Concert Hall .

With 3200 seats spread over four floors, its chandeliers, large curved stairs and its rich furnishings, the building is an impressive building. Construction work began on March 9, 1962, and the building was handed over on September 27, 1964. The opening concert took place on December 6, 1964 with the soloist Jascha Heifetz and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Zubin Mehta . The program included the fanfare by Richard Strauss , the American Festival Overture by William Schuman , the Feste Romane by Ottorino Respighi , and Ludwig van Beethoven's violin concerto . In addition to the “Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra”, the Los Angeles Master Chorals under the direction of Roger Wagner have also had their home here since the pavilion opened.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded the Oscars in the building for many years . The events took place from 1969 to 1987, then 1990, 1992 to 1994, 1996 and 1999. The Los Angeles Opera

Before the Los Angeles Opera was founded in 1986, the New York City Opera was a regular guest here . Such a guest appearance in 1967 consisted of two performances of Madama Butterfly , one of La traviata , and two of Alberto Ginastera's Don Rodrigo , each with Plácido Domingo in the lead role.

In 1984 the Music Center Opera Association hired the opera impresario and singer Peter Hemmings (1955–2002), who was to initiate the establishment of a local opera company with his own productions. In 1986 the Los Ageles Opera officially opened. In 2000 Hemmings moved to the London Royal Opera , and Placido Domingo, who had been Hemmings' artistic advisor since 1986, followed him as director of the opera. From 2001 the German opera manager Edgar Baitzel (1955–2007) increasingly took over management functions. Christopher Koelsch, who served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, was elected President and CEO of Los Angeles Opera in 2012.
